Phoenix: The Return?!

I know what you're thinking: "AGAIN?"

But anyway, I just got this promo art in my inbox from Marvel with just the tagline, "stay tuned."

What do you think it means?

Phoenix is one of my fave characters, by the way.

  1. It's most likely a cover for X-Men Legacy, the Mike Carey book that is some sort of "X-Men History Recap" thing from the perspective of a comatose Professor X. It's also got the dead/reformed/missing Cassandra Nova in the lower left.

I guess that doesn't rule her coming back though.

  2. Well, its not like they ever said she would be dead forever, right? I mean, that is sort of her thing, its one of the deaths you are expecting to be undone, like Capitan Amorica.

  3. Who's the dude on the left?

Chris seems on the right track. I'd believe. Plus, it's got the Brood there, and I'm pretty sure the X-Men genocided them a while back.

  4. Why not have her return... she will probably be alive until she is dead again, anyway....

  5. The "dude" on the left is presumably Cassandra Nova.

  6. It also might relate to Ultimatum, a Finch project which partly involves Ultimate X-Men (which title has been hinting at a Jean-Phoenix story for some time).

  7. They should put her in a box like that cat, then she can be dead and alive at the same time. Everyone's happy then.

  8. She IS named "Phoenix..."

  9. Chris is bang on - its a Legacy cover:

Looks like some of Xavier's failings to me - Phoenix, Cassandra Nova, Brood, Proteus...

  10. I'm not a big fan of wantonly killing superheroes but I do think that Jean Grey, Barry Allen, and James Hudson should've just stayed dead...the fallout of those deaths were a lot more interesting than the characters themselves ever were in life.

    Well..."comic book life." :)

  11. Aw man, Jean's shtick may be getting revived and killed off over and over, but the minute we admit that is the minute it's okay for Marvel to revive them! Someone has to keep the faith, and if it can't be Marvel, then it should at least be the fans! I still want Jean's death to mean something after all.

I originally thought the guy on the left was the Watcher, but whoever he is, he sure looks bored.

  12. I think I am in the majority, but I would be thrilled if Jean came back. I miss her. I'd kind of be happy if they just dropped the whole Phoenix thing though, maybe bring her back just as a telekinetic, like she was originally. I only say that because I would like to see the writers be forced to do something new with her, rather than just kill her off again.

But I'm going to have to go with the majority here and say that it's probably just a cover for "X-Men: Legacy."

  13. That first line should say "minority" instead of "majority."

  14. Heh. Bringing her back as just a telekinetic is was they did when they brought her back the first time.

  15. "is was"

    I type English good.

    "is what"

Well, let's make this more than a correction post.

I prefer Jean alive rather than dead, but then I first got to know her after she came back. And if there's one character in comics who should have trouble staying dead, it should be the one called Phoenix.

  16. As long as she leaves cyclops alone. I never thought i'd like an xmen character, and i don't keep up with the multitude of x-titles, but i find myself enjoying cyke whenever i come across him, and it's mostly because i don't have to read him crying next to jean, crying about jean, crying in jeans arms, etc.

  17. You know, thanks to your Tigra post the first thing that came to mind after seeing this teaser promo was a picture of my face with "LEAVE SCOTT AND EMMA ALONE!" imposed over it. :P

In any case, I agree that this is a mislead. I'm going to second the "Emo Coma Xavier reflects in X-Men: Legacy" theory. Sorry, Val!

  18. Definitely a X-Men: Legacy cover.

BTW, Jean has only "come back from the dead" once and that was when Marvel retconned her and the Phoenix as two separate entities before the first X-Factor series.

  19. So when's Uncle Ben coming back?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Did they ever officially make this one of her powers?

"Duh, her name is PHOENIX. Of course she's always going to come back."

  21. Ok, I also adore Phoenix, and I would love to have her return. But I just know that people are going to write about the love triangle between her, Scott and Emma. Given that Jean already showed up in the aftermath dream sequence in uncanny this month, I just have this really bad feeling that we are headed for emo-Scott instead of the butt-kicking Scott that he has become.

As for the Brood, we know that there is at least one Queen left, and we know that there are alternate dimensions were the Brood thrive. Never count them out.

I suspect that it will be a dream sequence of failing in Xavier's mind's eye (or we may find that the Phoenix is hiding in the Astral Plane).

  22. I would buy two copies of every marvel comic that featured the return of Uncle Ben if he also came back as a gun-toting lunatic who dressed like an Oscar Wilde-ean fop, and he was Spidey's most feared arch-nemesis. That would be the sign that comics were "good again."

  23. I took a crack at humor about the possibility of Jean coming back on my blog: http://schwapp.blogspot.com/2008/02/marvel-comics-is-bringing-back-jean.html

But I think people are right that it is just a Legacy cover.
