Actually, we are changing the name of this list to THE BIG TEN --
--because I think some important stories belong on the list but I feel creepy saying they are "hot." It makes me sound like Paris Hilton. If she was sort of a geek.
Anyway, WHO will be on the Hot, I mean THE BIG TEN???
The death of Steve Gerber was a sudden and entirely unexpected news item, yesterday. The man had a unique voice at Marvel in the 70's; his runs on the Defenders and Captain America both subverted and celebrated the super hero genre and his creation of Howard the Duck was a shining moment of pure, joyful genius.
ReplyDeleteWriters today should be made to read Gerber's work. Whatever happened to social satire?
the writer's strike being over
ReplyDeleteSteve Gerber's death certainly. The writer's strike bing over, yes. Stéphane Peru dies. Jericho returns. Valentine's Day. Obama. Fraction via la Iron Man
ReplyDeleteThe Big Ten sucks, the Pac 10 rules!
ReplyDelete...sorry I couldn't resist
1. The passing of Steve Gerber
ReplyDelete2. The Writer's Strike being over
3. The passing of Stephane Peru
4. FOX suing Warners over Watchmen.
5. Fraction on Iron Man
Gerber's death should absolutely be the "Big One." Beyond that, I'd say the end of the writer's strike, Stephane Peru, the new Guardians of the Galaxy ongoing (w/Rocket Raccoon!), the new Indiana Jones trailer (debuts today), Obama, Eccelston as Destro--and some other stuff I can't think of right now.
ReplyDeleteKevin N!!!
ReplyDeleteThe Pac 10 over the Big 10? As a diehard Ohio State fan, I can say you and I can never be friends! Boo Kevin!
Anyway, I think the fascinating discussion on women in power should be linked to. Maybe Fox suing WB. And, obviously, the deaths. Those are my votes!
Kenny,
ReplyDeleteOhio State huh? I'll be sure to talk slower and use smaller words. just kidding... I don't have much to brag about these days considering the Huskies haven't gone to a bowl game in about 6 years. At least the basketball team is... what? they suck too? ...crew we're really good at crew these days.
Steve Gerber and Stephane Peru are the only comics items this week that mean anything.

4. New Star Wars movie
5. New Iron Man series

YES.
Also, retro comics. I find myself buying FOUR of them now including the Next Issue Project book (with JSA, The Twelve, Project Superpowers).
1. The passing of extremely talented comic book professionals - R.I.P. Steve Gerber & Stephane Peru.
ReplyDelete2. The Writer's Strike ending.
3. Comic book romance/couples (ordinarily I'd say I'm just making a shameless plug but if it's in EW, it must be hot)
4. Invincible Iron Man
5. Blue Beetle(s)
6. WWII Superheroes
7. Stan Lee & Jack Kirby's Lost FF Tale
8. Top Ten Lists
9. Skittles (just ask Ami Angelwings)
10. Dinosaurs
I look at that Giant Man cover and I can just imagine when he walks around to have to turn his foot sideways all the time so he steps with the direction of the streets. Like in that picture, where do his toes go? That is an important question, definately deserving a top big hot list.
