New Comic Day: In and Out
Out: JLA/JSA Crossover. As much as I love Geoff Johns's JSA, and as much as I thought the retro-hip Meltzer JLA had a certain trashy charm, I just can't wrap my head around this crossover anymore. Maybe it's the 50 separate characters I have to follow, maybe it's the fact that I've bought 4 issues so far and I still can't tell you what the hell is going on. Like Cyclone's costume, though, it has that "Lollipop League" sensibility.
In: World War Hulk. Didn't have much hope for this crossover "event" past the "big dumb fun" factor but I have to admit that I'm hooked. Not happy that I have to buy 2-3 issues of "Heroes For Hire" to complete my WWH collection, though. And I'm tired of Reed and Tony being dicks. I hope Bruce smacks the shit out of them
Out: Supergirl. I gave this book a chance for the last three issues so far, just to be fair. It's a little wretched. "Oh, Silver Age Supergirl shows up!" Yep, that's never been done before. but also, it's sort of a lame duck with the new team coming on board. Same for "Teen Titans."
In: That David Hine book from Dark Horse with all the spookies and the Quesada quote on the cover. Cool.
Out: Buffy. Not because it's bad, but because I'm resigned to getting the trade paperback. Same for Lone Ranger.
One book that I wished I picked up: That cartoon Legion Of The Superheroes thing. I love that shit.
Laziest moment: finding out that I would have to travel to the second floor of the comic shop to get the issues of "Army of Darkness Vs. Marvel Zombies" I missed and deciding then and there to wait for the trade.
Weirdest moment: registering for this "customer rewards" thing at the shop, giving my name, and having the dude at the counter say without missing a beat: "oh, I've...read your blog."
I mentioned this to Gallaher in email, but holy crap you should pick up the Planet Hulk stuff as well. Essentially "Gladiator" with the Hulk, it's tons of dumb fun. I think Marvel are going to give it the big hardcover treatment, which I'm totally up for. My bookshelf needs more slabs of SMASH.
ReplyDeleteAnd JSA/JLA/Legion: Kinda fun, but I'll be real glad when JSA can get back to dealing with its new characters and the fallout of the opening arc. Ane while I haven't read the latest version of Supergirl, did I seriously see a cover where she had spiky things coming out of her back? What?
The spiky things coming out of her back is complicated - it has to do with her current arc (which IMHO isn't really that bad).
ReplyDeleteI've actually been enjoying the crossover (despite the horrible cover art on the JLA side of things).
What I don't understand, VSG, is why you feel the need to pick up any of the crossover issues of other titles for the World War Hulk mini. I say read 'em in shop if you really think you're missing out on the story, otherwise leave yourself only to the title that you actually want to purchase. ^^ I honestly don't understand the mentality of "Get this tie-in issue even though it actually doesn't really advance the story!" I didn't get any tie-ins for Infinite Crisis (unless it was already on my pull list) and I sure as heck won't be getting any tie-ins for World War Hulk. ^_^
Also, maybe this is covered in another part of the blog, but why the hesitation to go upstairs to the second level of the comic shop for the Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness issues? They're awesome! ^^

ReplyDeleteI can't see how it wouldn't be. I tried thinking of a reasonable explanation on my own and it left me looking like I'd just spoken to Evil in The Fifth Element.

With all due respect, VSG, I'm surprised that you would pick up a book written by Meltzer after what he did 3 years ago. What he did back then was wrong, and in some of the interviews he did, he was being incredibly dishonest. I may buy TPBs more often these days, but even so, I will not touch his JLA story with a 50-foot pole. Even if he didn't sink into the kind of violence, misogyny and political allegories he put into IC when he wrote the new JLA volume, does that prove that he's not a horrid writer?

ReplyDeletePossibly not, but it perhaps proves he's not a one-note writer. And of course, it's entirely possible that VSG is reading the book in case something happens in it worth discussing it, or that maybe Meltzer is getting something of a second chance.
Of course, best way to determine what the actual reasons are here would be to ask, rather grab on to the first knee-jerk response that comes through and ride it all the way to passive-aggressive land. But then, perhaps your over abundance of backbone means you don't have to consider things from more than one angle.

Something excessively complicated coming from Joe Kelly, King of the Clusterfuck Plot? It can't be!
