What Comic Books Are You Buying This Week?

It's the weekly question:

What comics are you buying?

What would you recommend?

And, an optional bonus question: what comics have you dropped?

On my list (so far)
Goon #23
Young Liars #2
Criminal 2 #2
Fantastic Four #556
Echo #2

Especially, if anybody can recommend superhero comics I might try, let me know. My list is conspicuously devoid of those.

And you can use this handy-dandy Midtown Comics shipping list to help you out!

29 comments:

  1. Right now I am buying:

    The Authority
    Runaways
    Buffy
    Angel
    Captain America
    JLA
X-Men (which just changed its name again..)
    Serenity
    Mystic Arcana
    Midnighter
    The Umbrella Academy

    I would wholeheartedly reccomend:

The Umbrella Academy, which I started reading because Gerard Way is awesome, has really pulled me in and I am totally sold.

Runaways is still excellent, and the Mystic Arcana issue featuring Sister Grimm was really solid.

    Dropping:

    The Authority Prime

    Thinking of dropping

    JLA

  2. My list for today:

For you specifically I'd recommend Booster Gold, Tiny Titans, and the new Justice Leauge Unlimited Trade (though I think you already have the singles)

  3. I can't believe you just asked for super-hero comic recommendations. On the internet? Fast-forward a couple of hours from now, and you're going to have a list of comments that will basically encompass the entire shipping schedule.

  4. This week: new Scud, BPRD, Punisher, and Doktor Sleepless. All of which are part 7 of 42...a mild exaggeration, but not a lot of closure this time around.

  5. Resurrection from Oni Press is good, and the series is just getting started too. Guggenheim states that the old V mini and regular series are strong influences on his vision for it.

Super-Hero stuff all DC this week:

    ASBAR
    Booster Gold
    Countdown (because I'm compulsive :-)
    GLC
    Justice Society

  6. Buying this week:

SERENITY BETTER DAYS #2 (OF 3)
    BOOSTER GOLD #8
    COUNTDOWN TO FINAL CRISIS 3
    GREEN ARROW BLACK CANARY #7
    GREEN LANTERN CORPS #23
    JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #14
    YOUNG LIARS #2 (MR)
    TITANS #1
    WONDER WOMAN #19
    PUNISHER #56 (MR)

Recommend (out of the above bunch)

-Wonder Woman - The series has improved with leaps and bounds as Gail Simone has taken reins on this sucker

-Punisher - It's Garth Ennis' last run on Punisher so it'll probably be pretty good

-Booster Gold - But....only for those that love the character or Giffen's ole school Justice League

Dropping (out of the above bunch)

-Justice Society of America - I love Johns work but, this title just is not doing it for me anymore. Come next order day, it's outta there. Too many characters and the story feels like it's treading water

    General recommendation:

Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane - It's kinda on hiatus now but Sean McKeever's run on it was great (chances are the public library will have it too...so money saved!)

  7. Buying:
    Punisher
Doctor Sleepless(hope something actually happens in this one)
    Amazing Spider-man
Fantastic Four(Really, it's all about Hitch at this point)
Wolverine(This Aaron/Garney combination is simply sublime)
    Criminal

    Dropping
She Hulk. What happened there? I dropped it six issues into Slott's run but picked up his last issue and really Really liked it. Expected much more from David than what he's actually delivered.

  8. Mike - So Resurrection is good? The quote on the cover of issue of #2 was a bit iffy, sounding like the art was great but the writing was just sort of there. I might go back and and get #1 and #2, then.

Nick - I'm feeling the exact same way about JSA. I really liked the stuff following the One Year Later jump, but it's slowed to a crawl now.

  9. For explicitly Super-Hero recommendations for this week I'd go for Wonder Woman #19 or the latest Amazing Spider-Man.

Both issues are the second parts of story arcs, but Wonder Woman has been consistently strong since Simone took over and the first part of the Wells/Bachalo Spider-Man was good fun.

  10. Super-hero wise, I'd recommend NOVA this week....but I suspect that you may read that one by proxy.

  11. Bonus Question answer:

I've dropped the Flash. I was really enjoying Waid's run. Especially enjoyed the initial issues with the Daniel Acuna art. Would've stayed with that team.

Also dropped Justice League. It seems completely lost and waaaay too tied into the horrors of Countdown.

There's a few titles that are on the bubble at the moment, but those could be turned around. I've been shocked at how strong Uncanny X-Men has gotten post Messiah Complex. If a title can do that fast a turnaround in quality, I'll give my other 'bubble' titles a bit more time to prove themselves.

  12. I'd recommend Spider-Girl, Nova and The 99. Some damn fine reads. Of course you already know about Booster Gold, and Blue Beetle has finally come along.

    GETTING:
    Amazing Spider-Girl #19
    Avengers Fairy Tales #2
    Batman Confidential #16
    Batman Death Mask #1
    Black Panther #35
    Booster Gold #8
    Countdown #3
    Countdown to Mystery #6
    Criminal #2
    Darkness #3
    Dead of Night #3
    Evil Dead #4
    Fantastic Four #556
    Green Arrow Black Canary #7
    Green Lantern Corps #23
    Hedge Knight #6
    Iron Man Enter Mandarin #6
    JSA #14
    Last Defenders #2
    Marvel Adventures Hulk #10
    Nova #12
    Punisher #56
    Titans #1
    Wolverine #64
    Wonder Woman #19

  13. Am buying and liking:
    Ex Machina
    Planetary (when it comes out)
    X-Factor
    Checkmate
    Fables (in TPBs)

Enjoy in TPBs but do not buy regularly:
Y the Last Man (ending anyway)
    Runaways

Am buying against my better judgment:
    Astonishing X-Men
    Serenity

    Plan to drop:
    Checkmate (when Rucka leaves)

  14. "no titans #1???"

after "Titans East Special" and "Green Arrow/Black Canary" I need a compelling reason why to pick up this Winick title

    ReplyDelete
  15. Chris - Resurrection is a pretty good read so far. It's early in the run so he's laying the foundation for a long story that he has planned out.

I think it's a series in the model of a finite overall story that will continue with sub-arcs and then eventually end.

  16. "no titans #1???"

You know, in the past I would have. I just feel like I've seen this act already (i.e., let's get the old team back together again).

The interview association of Titans to "Friends" by Winick IIRC did nothing to entice me. And I am a longtime Friends AND Titans fan!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I just bought and read Avengers Fairy Tale #2. It's a pinochio inspired story with Henry Pym, Vision, and Wasp. It was really good but a little short. It probably needed to be two issues.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I read Titans #1.
    In 5 minutes.
Read it again to make sure I didn't miss anything.
    Nope, I didn't.

I agree with a previous comment, the association with 'Friends' didn't help sell the series.

My comments on the Geoff John's board:
    Worst. Book. Ever.

Here's a better idea : scrap this book, and restart it with the DEOrphans that appears in The Titans #26 to 44.

That would at least have a story.

Or at least taken more than 5 minutes to read a oversized book.

    That's 10 minutes I've lost forever now...

  19. "My comments on the Geoff John's board:
    Worst. Book. Ever."

but see, after reading that I gotta go check it out ;-)

  20. -shrug-

    Your choice, your five minutes.
I won't contribute to the fund to pay for therapy after reading it.

  21. Criminal
    Wonder Woman
    Castle Waiting
    Booster Gold
    JSA
    Young Liars
    Last week's Jonah Hex

    ReplyDelete
  22. Mike - picked up Resurrection #1-3 today (couldn't find 4), and the premise looks really interesting. Thanks!

  23. Bought:

    Criminal
    Wonder Woman
    Nova
    Booster Gold
    Green Lantern Corps
    Number of the Beast
    Justice Society of America

Nova is full of consistently great superheroey goodness, and is detached from the Civil War MU (being set in outer space and all), which is a HUGE plus for me.

  24. Bought Booster Gold #8, Power Pack Day One: #1, Justice League International Hardcover 1, and Othello vol. 1.

    I'd definitly recommend Booster Gold.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Titans
    Suburban Glamour
    Young Liars
    Wonder Woman
    Green Arrow/Black Canary
    Goon

  26. Living in Japan I rarely get to buy comics (I order graphic novels and whatnot from Amazon.co.jp) so in actuality, I'm buying nothing this week.

However, if I had access to them, I'd buy:

New Mutants Classics Vol. 3 TP
    Groo Hell on Earth #4
    BPRD 1946 #4

And that's it. Looks like a weak... er... weak.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Er... week. Weak week. Yes, I am just that dumb!

  28. Young Liars # 2?!?! Did you read #1?
