Cher to Play Catwoman in New Batman Movie?

Is Cher on tap to play Catwoman in the latest Batman movie? The Telegraph says oui:

A studio executive said: "Cher is Nolan's first choice to play Catwoman. He wants to her to portray her like a vamp in her twilight years.

"The new Catwoman will be the absolute opposite of Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry's purring creations."

I'm taking this with a big grain of salt, but given the trajectory of the films so far, such a storyline featuring an aging Catwoman is not completely out of the real of possibility.

Cue the fan posters and the Photoshop.

... I think I just had twelve concurrent embolisms burst in my brain.

  2. I keep seeing her as the old cat throwing woman from the simpsons.

    That could work.

  3. When I was a kid I thought Cher was the Most Beautiful Woman in the World. I respect her acting skills. She's amazing in Mask. I think Nolan could coax a fantastic performance from her.

That said... I really, really, REALLY hope this isn't true.

  4. I can see that storyline working, I really can. But......

I have shipped the Cat and the Bat as soon as I learned about Catwoman and Batman. I will always ship them. Look Out! Here Comes a Comics Blog explains it much more succinctly than I can hope for this morning.

And while I know Cher has a thing for younger guys, I don't want to see her seduce Christian Bale. Ack! Give me the bleach right now! I have to scrub my imagination. I want a Catwoman who is Bats equal, not a Mrs. Robinson!

All that said, and I'll probably still go see it. *Sigh*

  8. Quoted for Truth from Blog@Newsarama:

"So, there you have it: Cher and Johnny Depp will star in the next Batman movie. Y’know, the one that, as of last weekend, Nolan hadn’t even committed to direct. The one that doesn’t have a script yet. The one that, according to The Telegraph, starts shooting early next year in Vancouver."

Sorry to drop a logic bomb on all the Cher lovers out there. If I could turn back time, if I could find a way, I'd take back these truths that just hurt you.

And thanks for the kind words, KLC!

Personally, I'm gunning for Catwoman and Hugo Strange.

  9. Joker roll FTW. Lucking foser. I've got enough of the troll in me still to appreciate the public spectacle of hyperbolic speech, but that sort of thing in private is cer-ee-pee.

As for Cher, I could roll with that. But then, I also dug on Maggie Gyllenhaal, while the overwhelming consensus among hypercritical jackasses was that she was "too ugly." Probably best to go sexpot with Jolie instead, though I'd rather see Hoffman's Penguin in his own movie.

  10. I tried to consider the fact that Cher's won an Oscar, and has had a career spanning decades. But I don't know if I could understand this choice, if, indeed, it's what Nolan wants to do with the character. But I trust Nolan. And I hope that whoever plays Catwoman gets a role that's written to be fun. Because heaven knows this series could use just a touch of levity.

I don't mean to be a surly old cuss -- mainly because I generally am one naturally, in spite of my best efforts -- but this, right here, is how dumb rumors spread.

Go back and look at the Telegraph article for me. No, really, just go back and read it. It's right out of the British Tabloid Official Stylebook For Shit We Make Up In Order To Sell Papers.

Note how none of the sources are attributed. Note how the supposed "studio executive" talks like a Telegraph blurb-writer. Note, for the luvva Pete, how the article states that the movie already has a "start date" and a location before anyone has even confirmed that there's going to be a third movie.

I'll concede that it makes for entertaining discussion, but this is precisely how such clearly bogus nonsense spreads across the Internet:

    1) A British tabloid (and these things almost invariably begin in British tabloids) runs a piece that thirty seconds' consideration would demonstrate, to any reasonable intelligent person, is more than likely false.

    2) Then a blogger like Valerie links to it. Granted, Valerie was careful to state that she took the piece with a grain of salt -- personally, I'd have recommended a pound of the stuff -- but that's an aside likely to get lost in a cursory reading.

    3) People begin remarking to their friends, to other bloggers, to anyone else who will listen, "hey, know what I just read? Cher's gonna play Catwoman!" Then, like the alien menace in John Carpenter's The Thing, the story starts spreading, increasing geometrically.

This is how stupid rumors start.

This has been a public service. Buy bonds.

  12. Hell, if we're going to have a post-menopausal Catwoman, why not get the real thing and hire Julie Newmar, who still looks pretty damn alluring in her early seventies? (Or, in the same vein, Michelle Pfeiffer -- probably a more realistic choice.)

  13. Well, if you want an aging Catwoman, why not hire Eartha Kitt?

I want to see the current, soon-to-be-cancelled comicbook version of Catwoman. I want Bruce Wayne/Batman to wrestle with the idea that his heart and his soul might be at war with each other were he to fall in love with Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Just like the Joker, Bats and Cats might be too similar, even though they have different agendas.
