Thank you!
If I didn't know you people existed, I'm really at an age (34) where I'd be ready to just finish off my responsibilities to the industry, close up the blog, settle down, raise children, get a degree in social work, and be done with it.
...
Still would like the "raising children" part regardless. Have 12 eggs left.
I had wanted to leave an encouraging comment, but you had the comment function switched off...
ReplyDeleteIn my mind this whole flap makes a lot more sense if we keep the stereotype of Comic Book Guy in mind: socially awkward, the world in which he feels king is between the pages of the funny books. EQ will average that of a teenager, and in such a finds graphic violence and 'sexiness' Awesum.
So, bottom line is that our nerd has built this whole inner world, with a set of moral (and social) parameters, which are very personal because he doesn't get out much. Now, if someone is to challenge these moral code, this is perceived as threatening to our guy, because it's like the Big Bad Outside World is impeding on his own turf. Suddenly the bully has made it to the attic room.
There's a page online somewhere which explains about nerd social conventions, but I can't find it at the mo....
What scrr said.
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of the flap over the guy who thought it was ok to ask girls to touch their breasts. Anyone who thought it was creepy was considered a prude...but the truth is *even other guys* inside the "bubble" thought it was a creep move.
You have way more patience and tolerance for this industry than is superhumanly reasonable, but I respect your intense passion for it. The pale-substitute-for-Blog@ guy sounds like he has a rusty axe to grind and I'd just ignore him if I were you. (Well, I probably wouldn't, but that's exactly why you should!) Stay focused on the issue -- which I agree with you on -- and keep fighting the good fight.
ReplyDeletePS: I'm looking forward to your take on C&D; it'll be the first Marvel title I'll have picked since I dumped the Big Two last year, or the year before. (NOTE: Except for Fables and Unknown Soldier!)
No problem, Val. I know how it is to be in favor of an unpopular opinion, and while I certainly disagree with your position, the nastiness against you is uncalled for and your opinion on the matter has no bearing on your ability to be President of Lulu.
ReplyDeleteStay awesome and don't let the bastards get you down! ^_^
your post about taking a public role against kiddie porn was truly inspirational. that is the best way to respond to the perpetrators, abusers and haters. and its the best way to make positive change and empower yourself. there's no reason you cant do that and still achieve your other personal goals. thanks for presenting a positve uplifting image and i look forward to your future work.
ReplyDeleteStay true to yer beliefs. You only lose when you give those up.
ReplyDeleteDidn't totally agree with you, but thought it was cool you stuck to your view despite a few asshats dragging the rest of us down.
ReplyDeleteAll the best to you and yours this season.
Writing from the perspective of someone who is often labeled a "Fundamentalist Christian" I want to thank you for making a reasonable case against child pornography. I am a fan of comics, supporter of the CBLDF, and lover of free speech. However, child (and the vast majority of other) pornography is not a free speech issue. It is a crime.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you one thousand percent.

I have enjoyed reading your blog for the past five months or so. I guess its the personal voice and the authetic voice that appeals most to me. Its the same with any blog or radio talk show that I follow. I noticed that in your past two blog entries that you left no space to comment hoping to avoid the negative comments that you have atracted lately in your “crusade” (and I hate to use that word because it diminshes the importance of the stand you are taking) to reduce the amount of pornography and the violence it directs (either directly or indirectly) towards women. I applaud your efforts very much and you can bet that I will be purchasing your issues of Cloak and Dagger when they are released. I am sure you will shine a light on the issue that will in no way be preachy but will be heroic and like you that is why I read comic books. I want to see heroes and though I don’t know you I can say with confidence that you are one of those heroes that inspire me in this world. Keep being as brave as you are and remember that justice and truth always wins out in the end even though it doesn’t seem like that often enough….Kal
ReplyDeleteVal, I spent thirteen years in public school as a nerd with allergies. (I identified with Bernard Marx from "Brave New World".) My tolerance for anyone is extremely high.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't mean I don't hold grudges, but I've learned to develop a personal philosophy to deal with such things.
Nobody agrees 100% with anyone else, but being a New Yorker, I value diversity, polite discourse, and opinions and facts contrary to my own.
So please, write what you feel. You give us a different perspective which is honest, and you allow us to discuss your viewpoints.
mark me down on the support side too.
ReplyDeleteI think in the comics biz people hating on you is a sure sign of your success.
Don't get beaten down by these clowns, Valerie. You've consistently been thoughtful and articulate on this (and many other) issues. We've never met, but I've been reading your blog for at least a year and you have my full support. Also, I'll be buying your Cloak & Dagger mini. :)
ReplyDeleteKeep your chin up. Just because some of us disagree with you (see my blog [shameless plug]) doesn't mean we don't appreciate and respect you. I mean that sincerely.
ReplyDeleteHave a great New Years!
For what it is worth, your writings, and those of other feminist comics nerds online, have changed my mind on a number of topics. Some have even made a difference in how I will raise my sons. Keep at it.
