Rachel Weisz To Play Catwoman?

I sure hope so.

If I was forced to look at Angelina Jolie's pouty mug for the next two years because she was playing that character in Batman III, I'd freaking...gak!

Jolie playing Catwoman is *such* a Joel Schumacher move.

And God, please don't double-up on villains either. When you double-up and triple-up on villains in a movie, you get this:

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Hell, I love exploding sharks.

  1. Just make sure you have your "Bat Shark-Repellent" handy!

Not sure about Weisz playing Catwoman. I suppose they have to have a fairly recognizable character in the third movie but I'm a little tired of Catwoman. Can't think of another really strong female Bat-villain other than Poison Ivy though and I get Schumacher shudders when I think of that one!

  3. Weisz is a perfect choice, personally. She's well known, but not overexposed to the level of Angelina, and she does have acting chops.

Also, she actually looks really good in a latex catsuit. Just putting that out there. 'Cause I'm shallow.

I love Batman '66. Love it.

  4. I think they could do a lot worse than Weisz, though I'm sure this is just another rumor.

What's wrong with multiple villains? Begins and TDK had 2 baddies apiece (3 if you count Falcone and Maroni). Nolan & Co. just know what they're doing, so that the villains are woven into the plot in ways that don't turn into goofy supervillain team-ups a la Spider-Man 3 and Batman Returns/Forever/& Robin.

    Also, that Jolie/Gollum mash-up? Horrifying.

  5. I don't think Angelina looks like Gollum in any way, and think she'd bring some very interesting aspects of her personality to portraying Catwoman. That being said, I think Rachel Weisz is a much more refreshing choice who will also bring some interesting things to the table.

I don't think you lose either way, but they'd be two very different movies.

As for other female Bat-villians, I expect we might see Talia al Ghul in the third installment if we're lucky. Unfortunately Bats just doesn't have that many female villians to pair up with. Selina, Talia, Ivy, I think that's pretty much it unless you go to obscure ones like Lady Shiva.

I was holding out for Cher...

Anyway, if we have Catwoman be more of a low-level villian/rival/lust interest, and a greater threat in the form of...? I mean, Batman III will have to deal with the repercussions of II, and that's a villian in itself.

  7. Multiple villains = individually they are no threat. Bad drama.

One hero. One villain. Henchmen to be sure, but no Super-villain team up.

    Please...?

Rachel Weisz = the win. I love the idea of a sexy, sophisticated woman out-thinking the Bats on many levels...the chemistry would be dynamite.

  8. She is an excellent actress as well as being hot. I will trust Nolan whoever he chooses to use at this point.

Given that Batman will be a perceived villain after TDK, she could make an morally ambiguous counterpoint.

I love Rachel Weisz and I love Angelina Jolie they would both be good. But I adored the idea of Cher playing the role, because she would put a different spin on it and having her play the role would not be so predictable.
Batman does not have that many female enemies. Maybe Harley Quinn could pop up to help out her puddin' ?

  10. Spoilers for Dark Knight:

The first 2 batman movies were about society and cities and the social order. Ras and Joker were perfectly used villains to explore those themes.

Its going to be quite a shock for Nolan-batman to explore issues of personal lust, won't it?

Though I guess the setup with SPOILERS Rachel's death in Dark Knight SPOILERS could put Batman in the market for a strange GF.

Nolan's batman doesn't seem like Catwoman's type at all though.

I still want to have the big urban social theme though.

  11. Nolan said he thinks Penguin is too out-there for his type of Batman, but I disagree. Technically Penguin is just a short, plump little-man who has a long nasal passage. I see people like that. Anyways...I was hoping the third, being in the vein of early Batman mythos, would stay in the "real" but hint to the future meta-characters. For instance, Wayne Enterprises and Wayne Tech could be making things that hint at other villains. A control-burn flame-thrower and a jet-pack on another level = Firefly. A greenhouse with Prof. Woodrue and Isley perfecting formulas that'll save dying forests and jungles. A "lotion" that heals wounds/scar-tissue. A cryogenics lab with Prof. Fries and a mysterious woman in a tube. Prof. Tetch trying to perfect the cat-scanner and lie-detector (have him drinking green tea and reading Through the Looking Glass.) They wouldn't have to get into these things deeply...just hint at them. I mean, with the Penguin in town, the black market would be booming. Wayne Technologies would start missing items and such. It could be a blast. They could have Selina Kyle in the flick and then hint at her becoming Catwoman at the end.

Nolan missed his chance to by Jack Ryder (who was the obvious talk-show host) and Renee Montoya (the latina cop). I'm sure it had to do with licensing or something. The last Batman film can actually be good. It'll be hard to top The Dark Knight, but the could at least attempt to match it.

  12. I really, really hope this rumor has some truth to it, because Rachel would be awesome! (imho) I am pretty tired of seeing Angelina everywhere. It's overexposure. She already got to be in Wanted, so maybe she won't even want to do another comic book movie?

However, I don't think Catwoman should be the only villain. The previous two movies had multiple threats. In Begins, they were working together, Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul. In DK, the Joker and the other criminals had a complicated relationship. There has to be someone else to interact with Catwoman, though I won't even guess, and leave the genius to the Nolans.

  13. Rachel Weisz seems like she'd be a pretty good choice for Catwoman. I think Angelina Jolie is too obvious a choice and overexposed at this point. She wouldn't be able to disappear into the character enough and casting her smacks too much of the Schumacher celeb-casting approach.

Worked great for the campy TV series (which I love, by the way), not so much when you're doing a more dramatic Bat-franchise.

And do they really need a name in the part? At this point, the Bat-flicks sell themselves. And I think the thrust of the next film is going to be Batman redeeming himself to the people of Gotham City somehow (unless Nolan continues the anti-vigilantism theme). That's a pretty big story unto itself and having someone too flashy as the villain would detract from that.

Speculation, to be sure. But casting Weisz would seem the smarter move storywise, while Jolie might turn the pre-hype into camp overkill.

  14. I never understood why when they have two villains they always have the villains team up!

Imagine a scenario where Batman enter a story where he has one of the more cerebral baddies starting one sort of crime spree (The Riddler creating a maze of false virtual identities and defrauding the city) as well as a more brute force spree like Killer Croc running rampant with a series of increasingly violent smash and craft robberies.

Then the whole caper could turn when The Batman herds the bad guys into each other.

  15. People still think the Cher rumor was real?

Seriously? And they actually *wanted* it to happen?

    Ok....

  16. You can do Catwoman and one other, especially if you play up her role in the very grey moral area.

Otherwise, yes... one villain. Unless you use a thug villain who's really just a thug. Like, you can have Killer Croc, you know? That's okay. Croc just hits. But you can't have Bane in Croc's role, since Bane is really much more interesting than that.

    ReplyDelete
  17. yes you can! You SURE can have Bane in a 'just a thug' role! I mean, it worked Brilliantly in Batman and Robin, right?

    Umm....
