Namor In Real Life

Cable & Tweed spotlights Alex Maleev's photo-realistic, somewhat middle-aged interpretation of Namor in Secret Invasion: Dark Reign:

As fo real-life inspirations for Namor, I always thought of this guy:

Am I the only one?
He has the same pointy ears, dammit.

  1. I recall some interview with a writer who said Spock was inspired by Namor, not the other way around. I wish I could remember where I read that.

  2. Namor came first.

  3. Am I the only one who thought Namor looked like Bendis? Or at least a love-child of Bendis and Vic Tayback of TV's "Alice"?

A friend showed me this book this afternoon and we spotted a panel with the unidentifiable (black hair, face changed from panel to panel) Norman Osbourne being modeled from a picture of Pachino from "Scarface". It might have been from one of the Godfather movies, but probably Scarface.

  5. Am I the only one that thought Namor came off like a complete goof? Kind of got pwned pretty easily by WQ, stammering along the way, loser faux facial hair, etc.

  6. One of my readers suggested Phil Collins. I find that hilarious.

  7. There are quite a few that look like Namor. Has anyone really looked at Zachary Quinto. I mean, there is a reason he's playing Spock after all.

    And...

Apparently Namor decided to start looking like Black Adam in The Incredible Hercules #122. If you google-image (Namor Black Adam) you'll get a lotta similar pics of them sitting in the throne. The pics of Namor are more recent, so I'm guessing Marvel totally copying that character. But, here are two character that are incredibly powerful and are rulers of their peoples and their lands.

  8. Gak! He does like Phil Collins! Or maybe Jean Reno (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000606/).

In my head, Namor is always played by Yul Brynner from "The Ten Commandments" (and maybe a little bit from "The King and I"). Just add the widow's peak hair and vulcan eyebrows and ears and there ya go. That stubbornness and imperiousness in Brynner's body language... to me, that's totally Namor.

When Alex Ross "cast" Michael Keaton as Namor in "Marvels", I thought he kinda missed the boat. However, maybe Alex Maleev hard about that bit of casting and was going for that in this portrayal of Namor. Meh. Namor just not getting no respect nowadays...

  9. Technically Leonard Nimoy came first, but I have no idea who Namor was supposed to be in that image. If people didn't keep outright stating who he was I would've assumed he sent a body double or something.

  10. I don't want to see a doughy-faced Namor who looks befuddled. Namor is regal and angry! He's a hateful snob. Even if he has no idea what the hell's going on, Namor would never let on. He'd be sneering down his nose at everyone regardless.

  11. What I heard is that they were actually making a pilot for a Sub Mariner TV show. Roddenberry was on set, saw the ears and liked them. The pilot didn't fly and Roddenberry got the ears to use for Spock.

  12. I did not like it. The Namor-loser.

  13. I was really startled to see this picture of Namor, too. Noticed it the other day, and I couldn't help but wonder what Marvel was thinking. Why would they do this to one of their line's most iconic characters? Just stupid. Bad enough to make him look back, but just based on the few pages I read, it was clear the writer had no concept of Namor's character.

  14. Bendis shouldn't be allowed to write anything but Daredevil. Seriously.

Just let him write Daredevil and that would be great.

  15. i think that's exactly what someone who lives underwater would look like: an alcoholic that never leaves his moms basement.

  16. Namor looks like he was binging with Amy Winehouse.

"They tried to make Namor go to rehab,
He said 'No! No! No!' "
