Want To Be An Assistant Editor At DC Comics?

They're hiring.

They're looking for an editor for their licensed publishing department, too.

  1. What does it take to get an interview with DC?

I've applied for the assistant editor position a few times before and never got anywhere. I'm educated, experienced, and awesome (lol). What gives?

  2. I'd love to apply, but it's a full-time job and I'm still in college, plus I'm sure I'd have to move to New York.

  3. hmm i shall look into this..thoughi'm more into the more hands on creative side..like directly writing and drawing my own stuff...but maybe if the stars align in some arcane fashion ..about the same odds that the pope will drink the blood of infants on TV...and i get in there..i'm so going to finagle a new shade the changing man series...somehow damn it some how....

god i'm be awesome yet ultimately disasterous. as i'd so undermine the same old crap they've been pushing out there..like my god i'd be a pain in the ass for a proper and good batwoman series or something of some value.

meh i know its really an unrealistic look at the job and yeah i'll seriously look into it but..i dunno..DC isn't a place i'd personally fit in with..not saying i'm more a marvel frat boy...i'm more like the weird guy in the corner of fantagraphics or slave labor..so meh.

  4. If I hadn't just dragged my husband from Indiana to California for a job last year, I would so be all over that.

    C'mon DC -- no telecommuting?

  5. Why stop at Editor? Why not try for one of the VP positions?

I recommend Indeed.com. It's much easier to use than Warner Brothers' site.

  7. I applied to at least a dozen positions at DC and other Time Warner divisions during my unemployment period, and STILL haven't heard WORD ONE from TW. And that's with a lot of DC friends trying to help get me in there. It's a huge friggin' mega-corp and things move verrrrry slowwwly. Fortunately I'm now working only a few blocks away, so I can visit at any lunch hour (if I have an appointment) and not have to work there!

  8. I signed up for the site with the intent of applying but then I thought, "Sign me up for the top spot, put me at Didio's desk and let me work my way down."

Don't assistant editors pretty much get chewed up and spat out? Would the person who gets that job really have any power to affect change or be involved creatively or would they just have to rubber stamp everything? Is that a good way to "break in," or should one just create his or hew own properties and stick 'em on the web for free and at least have total control over the aesthetics without any corporate dictatorial control?

Freedom in lieu of pay, I guess.

Also, I'm way over in Japan.

  9. Don't they usually hire from within? Sometimes companies have to put out the announcement even though they've already decided whom to hire. My company has done that.

  10. I'd imagine an assistant editor has a chance of becoming a full editor or, at least, in a better position to pitch a new series if they've been around enough. That would be the real appeal - it's the foot in the door that might lead to other potential things.

  11. It's tough to get any responses through corporate employment websites. You may be better off trying to get in touch through a Monster ad, oddly, or definitely through personal contacts.

It's all to do with who eventually gets to see your resume - you apply through this and its likely straight to corporate HR who haven't got the first clue about what makes a good editor. Monster may - may - end up going to someone internal at DC (but likely the same corporate idiot that does this) - but if you've got a contact inside editorial already, they can usually bump someone up the list by showing it to the editor you'd be working for.

  13. Dude I am all over that. Yeah, ok so I live in the UK and I have no experience but it would greatly entertain me to apply for the job. Anyway I could so do the assistant editor one. Bwa ha ha ha.

  14. This is admittedly dated experience, but of the three assistants I had a hand in hiring at DC/Vertigo, one was an intern and I'm pretty sure the other two were referred to me by Human Resources. (One of those was Cliff Chiang.) So it can happen. Of course, HR will favor the things HR departments everywhere favor, rightly or wrongly: relevant experience, a degree from an impressive college, a neat and professional resume and cover letter.

  16. It might just be me, but I think maybe Val threw that up there kind of not entirely seriously? But I'm having a cynical week.
