Rumor Of The Week

From LITG:

"I understand that Marvel have been playing wargames on how to persuade Geoff Johns to jump ship at the end of his contract (over a year away) and what to do with him when they get him, so expect to see DC Comics fight back pre-emptively…"

dude.

Geoff Johns at Marvel?

Could that happen?

What would he work on?

I said it before -- I think Johns is the foundation of the DCU.

So if -- theoretically -- he was to go to Marvel, would he be engaged in similar "world-building?"

As always, this is just speculation.

Also, according to the same column, Shooter is back on "Legion."

And Nova isn't canceled, which makes the BF happy. :-)

  1. John's Avengers run some years back was okay. I don't know where Marvel would fit him in, unless Bendis has said all he's wanted to say on the Avengers after "Secret Invasion". Maybe take over Fantastic Four after Millar and Hitch are done?

Johns are Marvel doesn't strike me as any kind of coup. Marvel has Millar, Bendis, Fraction and Brubaker. Plus, wasn't John's run on Avengers a bust? Get Morrison back at Marvel and I might be a little more excited.

  3. A, If Johns goes, that would be a blow. I'd be excited too? To see if anyone stepped up to the void, shook up the system? But last time there were shake-up rumors (Didio) they came to nothing. I also heard a rumor (at i09 I think?) that Time Warner is stepping in? Which again. Is a bad precedent, but could be good in an ideal world.

    B) Nova is freaking great, Val.

  4. Geoff Johns on Captain American once Brubaker leaves, maybe?

  5. Johns' Avengers was iffy at best. I really don't think he'd 'gel' with any Marvel properties outside maybe Spider-Man or the FF.

  6. Oh, and Nova not cancelled?

    Great news!

  7. You know, I identify Johns with DC so completely that it totally slipped my mind he did Avengers.

  8. Was Shooter ever even off Legion? The only place I heard he left Legion was the same place saying he's now back.

  9. Johns' move would not so much be a plus for Marvel as it would be a huge minus for DC. His recent Green Lantern crossover was a surprise hit when other books were tanking.

  10. I liked his Avengers, although what came before was a teensy bit better. And I can't believe Nova even reached chopping block stage. Do people NOT know a good comic when it hits shelves?

Geoff Johns at Marvel sounds pretty cool. Maybe he can shape up some of these new heroes coming out of New Warriors, Young Avengers, and the Initiative.

  12. If GJ left DC I would probably leave as well.

But he writes DC so well, I don't know. I wouldn't mind so much, he could take over Spiderman and undo OMD??? That would be fine with me.

  13. John's Avengers run was average at best, but compared with what Bendis has done with the title, Johns run look like gold coated diamonds.

  14. Well, I'm a big Marvel fan currently and I can't stand most Johns' repetitious fan-service writing style (didn't he just use the same device to explain away both Toyman's and Brainiac's inconsistencies over the years--within a month of one another? And in the same title? Once is fine, but is it too much for him to come up with something new for the other villain?) that I don't want him anywhere near Marvel. Sorry, but a nice Batman-and-Booster scene doesn't make up for EVERY SINGLE BOOK starting in a first-person narrative with no difference in the speech patterns or the personality behind them.

The Johns who wrote Stars and STRIPE and co-wrote Beast Boy would be welcome at Marvel. The one who wrote Infinite Crisis and Green Lantern Rebirth should just keep muddying up the pool he's already in.

  15. Has everyone forgotten that when Johns did "Avengers," he was getting constant grief/direction from Marvel editorial, Bill Jemas specifically? Or that because decompression was "in," they were extending his single-issue plots to multi-issue? Brevoort's a good editor, so I assume they allowed him to do it himself, but I can't say for certain. Let's not forget, this was the JSA co-writer/That "Flash" Guy back then.

Finally, I thought the book was pretty good besides. I bought his whole run, at a time when that was probably my only Marvel title, and I don't consider myself a Johns fan. Maybe it was all that U.N. business or the C-listers that brought the indifference...

  16. aw man, johns and morrison are the only reason dc's readable right now. i hope he stays put.

  17. I don't think Johns would be very good at Marvel at all, but taking him out of the mix for DC would be an almost crippling strike.

...or it could be awesome. DC's been in a bit of a rut I think, and losing their so-called foundation might be just the thing.

Also, yes, Nova is freaking awesome.

  18. I agree with jaded devil about Johns' action comic run. Its bad, but I'll take a Johns' Hulk and/or Iron Man run anyday of the week.

  19. If they get Johns to do some "world building," I give it six months before either he or Bendis leaves.

  20. Johns to Marvel? Where he'd stop enabling DiDio? Oh please, Shakira's ass, yes! Yes! YES!
