Christian Bale WTF?????

No seriously, is this movie cursed? Is Maggie Gyllenhaal going to go apeshit and shave her head now?

(see, I thought I was going to be too distracted by SDCC to get my blogging mojo back. but the world keeps providing me with material)

Says it was all a fantasy in the end and never really happened:

  1. There aren't any details beyond the charge. I wonder if drugs and/or acohol are involved. or if there are some serious family issues going on.

  2. I would be very disappointed if these allegations turned out to be really true.

I've heard the point brought up a few times that it is not the intense movie roles that help bring some actors like Heath Ledger to the edge -- because if that was the case, "American Psycho" and "The Machinist" would have drove Christian Bale bonkers. And Bale seemed so supposedly "normal," so he obviously was able to handle and "recover" from those roles.

But who knows what sort of stress being a child actor gave him on top of everything else?

  3. I guess the age at which it's no longer okay to beat the hell out of your siblings is somewhere lower than 34?

  4. Think of it this way: didn't Bale say any Batman movie with a Robin in it wouldn't have him as Batman? So okay, now the third movie can have Robin in it!

  5. I love how on other sites people are commenting that "the mom and sister must be liars and money-draining hangers-on."

I love how that is automatically assumed by a portion of the public, that they are liars.

  6. I made the point over at my blog that assault in the UK is not the same as here and isn't actual physical assault, it's placing the victim of the assault in a situation where they feel that physical harm is imminent.

It doesn't necessarily make it better, but it does at least suggest that he didn't strike either his mother or sister.

Frankly, yelling matches in families can get out of hand. Obviously without knowing details, I'd be surprised if any charges are placed in this.

  7. Bale's inner Patrick Bateman is creeping out!

Man, I hope this turns out to be bunk cause that's some seriously screwed up family life right there.

  8. I really hope that it isn't true, but I agree...assuming the mother and sisters are liars is total ***%%^@!!

  9. Valerie,

People usually side with their friends. They usually give their friends the benefit of the doubt. And the thing with public personalities is that we often think of them as our friends. So most people are automatically giving Christian Bale the benefit of the doubt.

That being said, it's not right. To blame the victims is never right. Truthfully, it's not right to make much speculation at all at this point, with the information that is currently out there.

But it is sad to see this news at this time.

  10. I'll be devastated if he's really guilty of something this horrible.

  11. well, indications are sort of now that it *might* have been only verbal assault...but still, that can get kind of awful.

  14. From the LA Times...

Attorneys representing "The Dark Knight" star Christian Bale have released a statement on their client's arrest Tuesday morning for assault charges.

"Christian Bale attended a London police station today, on a voluntary basis, in order to assist with an allegation that had been made against him to the police by his mother and sister.

"Mr. Bale who denies the allegation, co-operated throughout, gave his account in full of the events in question, and has left the station without any charge being made against him by the police.

"At this time, there will be no further comment by Mr. Bale."

So unless mum and sis are talking, we may never know what this was all about.

Bale is a notoriously private actor, and I'm betting this mystery will never be fully solved.

Families are complicated, sibling relationships are tricky and childhood stuff never really goes away. Just ask Bruce Wayne.

It sounds to me like he wasn't even charged with anything, certainly not "arrested and forced to post bail" like many of the stories I've seen online today. From all that I've read on the subject, it sounds to me like it's something that they need to work out between themselves.

  15. This news really blows my mind...

  16. Out of all the drugs I've been around, the one drug that scares me the most is alcohol. The way this incident has been described has all the earmarks of classic drunk behavior. There doesn't have to even be a serious family issue for something like this to happen when alcohol is involved.

With that in mind, I'm not going to judge Christian Bale based on these preliminary reports. Not that being drunk would let him off the hook, but without knowing all the facts about the family's inner workings, it's not really fair to lambaste the guy even if he did do this.

It could be a very isolated, one-time thing he regrets horribly for all we know. Not excusing it, but I've personally seen perfectly wonderful human beings do things drunk they would never do in their right minds, things that to my mind were even worse than anything I've read about this incident.

Like Bale's mother and sister, you don't put up with it when it happens, but you do things like call for help, protect yourself, then move past it. And the rest of us weren't even there or involved in any way.

And to those unnamed people calling the mom and sister liars- Wow. That's beyond ridiculous.

  17. Ok... reading more about it it doesn't seem to be an alcohol-related thing. Some sort of "ongoing family dispute" and involved something described as a "shove."

Still illustrates the dangers of rushing to judgement.

  18. "and did you know that Bale's dad divorced his mom and then married feminist icon Gloria Steinem???"

    Yep. And also this:

"Feminist activist Gloria Steinem was among those opposed to the release of Ellis' book (American Psycho) because of its portrayal of violence towards women. Steinem is also the stepmother of Christian Bale, who portrayed Bateman in the film adaptation of the novel. This irony is mentioned in Ellis's mock memoir Lunar Park."
