"...Bond is an imperialist, misogynist sociopath who goes around bedding women and swilling martinis and killing people. He's repulsive"

  3. And that's the point! Cue Warren Ellis quote:

"[Bond] is England’s blunt instrument of international assault — the spiteful, vicious bastard of a faded empire that still wants the world to do as it’s bloody well told."

  4. I mean, I agree with Damon? Which is why the reboots are so good-- he's been reimagined to be what he IS. He isn't a suave gentleman, he's a thug! But I can like a misogynist thug-- as long as it is clear that is what he is.

  5. TF there's a big difference between Jason Bourne and James Bond.

Bourne was programmed by the government to be a killing machine that operated almost by remote control without a great deal of conscious will, and he was definitely a one-woman guy.

Bond, as much as he's enjoyable on a visceral level, is a thug who does what he does by choice, and would screw anything in a skirt with a pulse. MAYBE not the Daniel Craig version as much but it's still what he is.

Bourne is essentially a good buy co-opted by the government, Bond is all anti-hero.

Characters like Bond and people like Eastwood are human. Maybe some of their actions can be considered repulsive, but I actually find them more compelling because of it. I actually find Damon's holier than thou attitude a bit repulsive, but I think he's pretty awesome at the end of the day. If you read the whole interview, he does make a good point that the "corporate" version of Bond is a dinosaur, but I think that dinosaurs (and corporations) are always the last to change with times, and consequently, I cut them some slack. Maybe I'm to forgiving.

  9. Yeah I agree with Damon, he's a pretty smart guy.

Craig what's his name I like too, specialy when he openly mocked noel ghallager for saying he should play him in an Oasis biopic.

But, Quantum of Solace? More like Quantum of Bad Movie! BOING!

  11. I agree with him about classic Bond. The newer Bond is more openly thuggish, but has a lot more depth.

  12. Um...that's kind of been the thesis of the Bond franchise these last two movies, Matt. And unlike your Bourne sequels, I could tell what was happening.

The Bourne Identity, though; that was pretty aces.

  13. Damon is just one more person who either doesn't know what the word "misogynist" means or doesn't really pay attention to what happens in Bond movies and books.

In any incarnation, literary or film, Bond does not hate women. Indeed, he has a weakness for women and has often risked his life (and sometimes his mission) because of his concern for a woman. The character's all too human (one of the main reasons Bond is still around after over 55 years) and his flaws are many, but misogyny is not one of them.

  14. Paternalism is a form of misogyny Kevin.

I have not read any of the novels, but have seen most of the films. Up through the Moore years, he was absolutely portrayed as a misogynist in the movies. I don't believe Casino Royale portrayed a misogynist so much as a fucked-up dude with a lot of issues.

  15. You can't be serious?

    Do you really think that
James Bond is such a bully!

In the classic James Bond movies
    he barely ever fight!,
when he does, he fight like a gentleman.
Also alot of the fights is actually,
more James Bond being beaten up,
    than him beating the others.

    He selfsacrifice himself for the
sake of peace on earth and his country.
    One mission after another,
only thing he ever gets in return is a thank
you and by the ways, here's a new mission...

    A bully? No absolutely no,
    a gentleman? Yes.

How can it make you evil just because
    you sleep with some girls!!!!
Who does so by their own will?
It smells of fan boys who never got
something, and therefor are deadly jelaous.

    I spell bad I know.
