I mean, imagine if those "Supergirl" and "JLA" covers looked like this.
A lot of the time, I don't think it's the artist; it's the market. I think the type of art Turner is known for is drawn in a certain exaggerated style that his fans call for. In the case of the "Heroes" covers for TV Guide, I think it would have been too "off-model" for him to draw in that skinny, elongated style.
I think there are very few "hot" artists who are the frequent target of critics that are truly without the talent to "draw better." Most have a range. They draw what sells.
That image of Claire would have made a great Supergirl, BTW.
Its okay I guess - but the two characters with the flaming fireball thing looks more like he couldn't think of anything more interesting for them to be doing, the guy on the left looks a little wooden and as for the dude in the suit? Is he suuuuuper elongated like that in the program?
ReplyDeleteAlso, still no feet.
Judging by this, it appears Claire is being played by Lindsay Lohan now. Man, I need to catch up.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, a lot of Michael Turner's earlier stuff is fantastic, which makes some of the debacle over recent covers all the more depressing.
i liked his supergirl stuff. and Civil War #2 is one of his best covers ever.
ReplyDeleteSammy, I also like all of Turner's recent output. I like the super elongated style. I truly enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteWhat I'm sick of, and Valerie's not guilty of this, is people implying liking stuff like Turner's recent covers means we have poor taste. People like different things. I still like Rob Liefeld, I don't care what anybody says. When I see his art, I get hasppy, so it's good enough for me.
Actually, everybody's still pretty elongated. The reason it's less noticeable is that everyone's feet ar cut off at the knees (a common mistake by untrained artists).
ReplyDeleteI wanted to post 'No such thing', but that is a decent cover.
ReplyDeleteMaybe not so much the market - fans demanding the 'elongated style' - but the models.
If Turner were to illustrate this in his 'standard' style the piece wouldn't be saleable. Nor the models recognizable to the general public.
Photo reference helps.
ReplyDelete"People like different things."
ReplyDeleteYeah, but that doesn't mean there's no such thing as bad taste, or that taste has a flexibility that is infinitely relative. There are people who like the pretty paintings of fruit and flowers sold in Wal-Mart more than the unlovely portraits of Lucian Freud, or prefer Sidney Sheldon to William Faulkner, or, whatever. Those people have unequivocally bad taste.
Now, people can embrace their bad taste and say "I don't care, it's what I enjoy, so bite me." John Waters has made a career of it. (Me? I like dirty movies about chicks in Nazi uniforms.) But it's still bad taste.
And yeah I think that's a good cover. For Michael Turner. It's more surprising than pleasing. I'm not sure I'd look twice at it on the shelves.
ReplyDeleteMichael Turner and Rob Liefield have terrible ideas about anatomy and composition! These things make them objectively bad!
ReplyDeleterob liefeld i cant really agree on.
ReplyDeletebut i do like michael turner. sure his WOMEN are not done well, but his men are.
Civil War, Civil War, Thor, Onslaught Reborn, JLA
These are all good covers IMO.
And I also liked his Supergirl stuff better than the past couple of "fat supergirl" issues, thankfully the upcoming artist is better.
oops
ReplyDeleteCivil War
I swear, if I hear one more person call Renato Guedes Supergirl run (such as it was) the "fat Supergirl", I'm gonna start throwing things.
ReplyDeleteI will be handing you things. & I'm notoriously superficial.
ReplyDeleteI will be suggesting things to be handed to you, in order that you may throw them. Dangerous things. Bitey, pointy, or flaming things.
ReplyDeleteBecause - while I can't say I really like Guedes' art - the idea that it's what passes for fat is highly disturbing
throw away.
ReplyDelete"Renato Guedes' "fat Supergirl" run"
ReplyDeleteI had to chuckle at that one. I didn't care for Guedes' art but I still read each issue. My son, on the other hand, couldn't get past the art and, yes, he called it "fat Supergirl" as well.
