It's not you. That Omega book is just junk. I can only imagine its critical reputation is holding up because of the same people (or same types) who make his utterly mediocre fiction sell a ton.
Hey, I enjoyed your Titans East video review, but this represents a 1000% improvement in structure and flow. Definitely keep this stuff up!
Although I've gotta say, a few more random SuperManBoy Prime appearances would make it truly awesome.
I also liked the "neoconservatives = babykillers" schtick... it had echoes of the "young Republicans" gag from the end of the original Buffy movie. Both are shots at my own sensibilities, but the delivery still makes 'em funny!
I like the idea of this segment and I like your opinions.
But you could really shorten the runtime. And if you clean up the editing and write some quick copy for yourself, I think you could be the Andy Rooney of the comic book industry. And I mean that in the most awesome of ways.
I love reading your stuff. You keep the industry honest and personally, you've made comic reading more enjoyable with your insights and critiques.
If you clean up the presentation a bit, I think you'd attract a great audience.
If you want someone to clean up your next one, contact me. I think 30 minutes on FCpro could make a world of difference.
But regardless, keep doing them. These are a great idea. Your opinions are terrific and your personality is very entertaining. Let it shine through in these video pieces as much as they do on the blog.
I can only assume you're coming up with some sort of Joe Bob Briggs/"buckets of blood" rating system for the industry.
Another good vidcast, and throw my hat in the 'huge improvement in presentation' ring.
Another suggestion, and I'm not sure how practical it would be, might be to mount the comic on some kind of clipboard when trying to show us pages- I get kind of distracted when you're waving the book around trying to see what you're pointing at. ^_^
Perhaps, also, you could do a quick cut and have the camera focused more on the page, and have you point to panels with a chopstick or a laser pointer (Lasers!) or a Spiderman or something from off screen- that way you'd be able to focus on the page better and I wouldn't get motion sickness. ^_^
Again, I'm enjoying this segment, great entertaining stuff!
I loved the first video review, so I can't wait to go home and watch this one, too! I think you're the voice the mainstream comic industry *desperately* needs!
ford,
I haven't read my issues of Omega yet; I've been too busy to read comics for the past few months. However, I like Lethem's fiction a lot. I mean a *lot*. I think he's clever and funny and has a voice for saying things in fiction that are almost impossible to say. I wasn't aware his books sold a ton. I was under the impression he had one book that sold well, Fortress of Solitude.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading my Omega issues. They very well may suck, but I'm hoping I enjoy them as much as I've enjoyed the books I've read from him so far.
This was good. If possible, either increase the time an interstitial is on screen so you can read it or shorten the text so you can read it in the time allotted.

It could use some music, Val, otherwise great show! ^_^
ReplyDeletePlease keep doing this! I totally dig these video reviews:
ReplyDelete"5 cans of red bull ... with ... a Crispy Cream Chaser!"
I'm so stealing that line.

And you're spot on with NEW GODS. It is funny.

"Andy Rooney of the comic book industry" is a good call.
ReplyDelete*thumbs up*
ReplyDeleteLove the vid casts!
One last comment...Set the camera back away from you a bit. And higher. It'll create a better frame.
