New CEO of Archie Promises To Make Archie "Entertainment Powerhouse"

Jon Goldwater – son of Archie founder John L. Goldwater – has officially taken over the family business as CEO of Archie Entertainment. In a press release, he promises to bring "the kids from Riverdale to a larger multi-media audience."

"He is also looking ahead to developing new projects focusing on not just Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jugehead and Reggie, but other long standing Archie Properties such as Katy Keene, Lil Jinx, the Red Circle Heroes, Sabrina, Josie & the Pussycats, Cosmo The Merry Martian, Pat The Brat, Wilbur Wilkins, Bingo Wilkins, Suzie and Ginger Snapp, just to name a few."

  1. Um... Won't it be hard to use the Red Circle heroes, since Archie just licensed them to DC?

  2. Those covers are a scream! The art on the Pat The Brat one is really cool, too.

  3. Cosmo The Merry Martian will be the next Pokemon. Mark my words. Kids love Martians. And space jokes, Sputnik, Neil Armstrong, etc.

  4. Since Archie is a family-owned company, I suspect that movie options have been tightly controlled.

Thus, Red Circle could be optioned, and would be a good candidate, as JMS is writing the books for DC. Print rights and film rights are two different things, although it is possible that Warner/DC added a Right-Of-First-Refusal regarding any possible feature film.

Regarding obscure characters... remember that movie about a vampire hunter with Wesley Snipes? It grossed $70 Million in 1998 and had two sequels.

  5. I hope the younger Goldwater isn't as ridiculously puritanical about his company's characters as his father was. Remember the fuss the senior Goldwater made 10 years ago, when Melissa Joan Hart posed for some swimsuit photos while she was still playing Sabrina? It wasn't as if MJH was posing nude for Playboy, for heaven's sake.
