Partridge Family Pimping

Actual description of new Partridge Family TV series from NBC:

"A struggling, sort of well-meaning mom pimping her kids in order to create a wholesome-slash-sexy cash cow."

Will Dina Lohan star?

Postscript: Original post title was, "Why Hollywood sometimes makes me vomit."

  2. "Pimp" is a word that, for many, has lost all its negative connotations in a very short period of time.

Heck, what am I talking about? It's not just the word. The occupation itself has been glamorized to a disturbing extent. Many seem to think pimps are cool despite the fact that their "occupation" is to take down-on-their-luck women and girls, send them out to perform sexual acts for money, then take most - if not all - of that money for themselves. All this while using violence to enforce their will.

The word and the practice need to be reinfused with the disgust we should feel when women are cruelly mistreated.

Note: I'm actually not against prostitution and believe it that it should be legalized. I've just got a problem with slavery.

  3. Seeing the word "pimp" used in connotation with child stars -- even fictional ones -- is more than a little disturbing, especially considering the horror stories that keep cropping up about showbiz kids.

  4. Does this mean she's decorating them with lots of shiny gewgaws and frippery and whatnot? Gold rims and super-low thumpin' bass systems?

And do these children enjoy being pimped? Is it their choice, or is she forcing them to sell themselves to the cannibalistic world of instant celebrity?

    This show is unneccessary.

  5. The concept for the show is worth exploring, I think -- it could be a really dark satire. But I can't see why the owners of the Partridge "brand" would want to be associated with it. (Well,, there's money, I guess... but it still seems like a bad fit.) The "pimp" word is unfortunate, and uncomfortable. Most likely this is going to be a bad show -- but if done with a sharp wit and a bold, take-no-prisoners style (that we have no reason to expect), it could be a really *good* show.

But the smart money says Sucks.

  6. I don't want to see Partridge Family reimagined. I don't want to see Star Trek reimagined. And I still haven't seen Battlestar Galactica reimagined. Leave my childhood alone, please.

  7. "pimp" is much cooler than "exploit".

If done correctly, as a PG-13 show, it could be quite successful. All the musicians could be teen stars (unlike the original show), you could have them tour on the show, creating local interest. Make them homeschooled, add the occasional "message" and it will appeal to both red and blue staters.

Wait a minute... Wasn't the "Brady Bunch Hour" a knock-off of the Partridge Family?

Oh, and about Battlestar Galactica? It was re-imagined as "Star Trek: Yoyager".
