From Marvel:
There’s a new Black Panther leaping onto shelves this February and she—yeah, you heard us—is already making waves in the mainstream. What’s happened to T’Challa, the previous Black Panther? What does it mean for the future of the Black Panther? And just who is under that mask? For some answers and hints, the men behind this new plot twist sat down with the Washington Post in their first interview-- read what Marvel Editor in Chief Joe Quesada and series writer Reginald Hudlin had to say here. There’s a storm brewing in Wakanda, and it hits this February in the extra sized Black Panther #1!
With a female Kraven The Hunter and a female Bullseye, there seems to be a trend at Marvel regarding revisioning traditionally male characters as females.
Who's next? And what do you think?
As for me, I think it's aweeeeesome.
Don't forget the short-lived, American Dream.
ReplyDeleteIt could end up going well, if the new Panther is given time and opportunity to shine not just in her title, but in future interactions with Marvel's other heroes. But in terms of promoting her, Quesada's already doing more for her than DC seemingly ever did for Kate Spencer.
ReplyDeleteThe new Kraven and Lady Bullseye could need more time before they can be gauged as "successful" or not. I hope that the creative teams stick with the characters and make them well-rounded, vital pieces of their respective rogue galleries and they're not just discarded after their current arcs. I particularly want to go back and re-read Lady B's debut.
Don't forget that Mr. Sinister is currently a "Ms. Sinister" as well.
ReplyDeletewow. but what's with that costume. shouldn't she be showing off her mid-riff, and where are the thigh high boots, and tube top. whoever the artist is as no idea how to draw a female hero.
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody know who drew that image?
ReplyDeleteLooks sorta like Sal Velluto.
I wonder if this answers the earlier question about chick comics.
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that the new Black Panther is a woman.
ReplyDeleteMy problem is that it's Reggie Hudlin writing it.
Hmmm. Seems remarkably similar to what they did the last time Black Panther's sales were falling - replace T'Challa with someone new and different.
ReplyDeleteI heard this rumor at the September Diamond Retailer Summit, and got to wondering when I read up on T'Challa.
ReplyDeleteIs her name T'Chama? Is she royalty? If she wears the costume, is she Head of State? Will she make use of all the cool hi-tech weaponry Wakanda owns?
And will she ever wear a purple costume?
Just found your blog a few weeks back and I think it's great... I'll be looking to pick up some of your work soon.
ReplyDeleteBest,
Matt
Well, I like how she...looks like Cassandra Cain...OH MAN BATGIRL HEART POWER ACTIVATE BATSIGNAL STYLE.
ReplyDeletePutting more women into the mix is a plus, I'm down with that. Will it be worth reading is the next question. Catch phrases like "bleak" and "upping the stakes" make me wary. It takes time to change things around though, so keep on keepin' on Val.
ReplyDeletedoes that imply Cougar status upon her? Is she single? Just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteWhat was that old Claremont line? "Is there any reason this character couldn't be a woman?"
ReplyDeleteI'd rather they make NEW female characters that don't suck rather than ones riding on the coat tails of their male predecessors. That's like saying hey, we're making female characters now, but we're basing it off a male version we already have because that will make them cool and hide the fact we ran out of original characters 15 years ago!
ReplyDeleteAs for the new Panther, I'll check it out, but as I think Hudlin's run on Panther before completely sucked, I doubt I'll find this version all that interesting.
"A STORM is brewing in Wakanda..."
ReplyDeleteHrrmmmmm......
I don't know who rendered it, Val, but I can certify that it's NOT my pal Sal.
ReplyDelete"There’s a storm brewing in Wakanda, and it hits this February in the extra sized Black Panther #1!"
ReplyDeleteA "storm" brewing in Wakanda? Yeah...I figured it would be Storm....the line above confirms it.
I think it's Storm.
ReplyDeleteBut don't quote me.
Can we have a male Ms. Marvel?
ReplyDeleteThis sucks. The costume looks like crap on a woman, and this is exactly what happened to the Priest series, sans penis. I reckon Black Panther is a generational title, but T'Challa's the only bearer I ever wanted to read about, and not with Hudlin supplying the scripts. How can you be a lithe jungle cat with big 'ol chesticles dangling like that? Has Marvel never seen women's gymnastics? FTL.
ReplyDeleteUmm, Mark? Yeah, his name is Mar-Vell.
ReplyDelete(Snark aside, I am more than a little pleased that a female legacy hero has apparently outgrown and outshined her male counterpart :D)
Storm was my first thought as well, but it seems too obvious to me. And the costume does look like Cassandra Cain Batgirl, sans ears.
ReplyDeleteStorm stole Batgirl's costume or bought an old one on ebay.
