Mahnke Mahnke Mahnke

Some reasons why I think Doug Mahnke is an artist suited for iconic DC events.

That said, he needs a good inker like Tom Nguyen to really bring out all the detail in his pencils.

Can anybody confirm if DM is really drawing the last ish of Final Crisis or not?

  1. I think Mahnke, Rags, Jamal Igle and Amanda Conner should draw everything for DC. And if they can't do it, we'll clone them. ;)

It would get me buying DC's books again, I'll tell you that.

  2. I don't know, there's always been something about Mahnke's art that throws me off. The art itself is fine, but for some reason I think the heavy shadows and lines just doesn't resonate with me. I think it's also in the faces - something just seems off about them, especially around the eyes.

  3. Testify! Mahnke is the mad notes. He's the only reason I've read a big batch of JLA.

  4. I'd just like to see Nick Cardy doing DC's covers again. :)

  5. I love Mahnke's little Orphan Annie eyes on surprised faces during a serious superhero comic. That alone made me one of his biggest fans.

  6. I always thought Mahnke as an artist is totally wrong for DC comics in a way that works totally great for DC comics.

I realize that makes no sense at all, but there it is.

  7. Christian Alamy is Mahnke's best inker, especially on big events. Nguyen helps bring out the more gonzo elements in Mahnke's style, which turns off mainstream DC fans, whose preferences skew conservative. Really, Mahnke belongs at Marvel, but so long as he's at DC, he needs someone like Alamy to gussy up and tame his pencils.
