Captain Janeway: "I Didn't Want To Be Sexy"

An interesting quote from Kate Mulgrew, who played Captain Janeway on Star Trek Voyager:

"They were quaking in their boots to put a woman in the (captain's) seat. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out it's about sex. I didn't want her to look like someone they wanted to have sex with. I argued the fact that I didn't want her to have any sex as the first female captain because I was not going to run the risk of walking down the path that leading ladies have taken before -- to become a sexual object."

  1. I never really warmed up to Janeway, but I did really appreciate that aspect of her character. It's no surprise to me that they made her an Admiral when they finally made it back.

  2. I never thought of her as "sexy", but certainly attractive. By the end, I really enjoyed her stint in the center chair.

Now as for sexy, I actually preferred Kes in a cute way, but B'Elanna was THE one I'd really want to have mad, passionate love with. Seven was ok, but a little too cold, and too obvious a choice.

  3. It's a little odd that Mulgrew went out of her way to try to not have Janeway be considered attractive, though, considering that the first two captains were considered highly attractive in their day (wasn't Patrick Stewart named 'Sexiest Man alive' during his show's run?). I appreciate her efforts to have Janeway taken seriously, though.

If only Seven had worn a normal uniform (though the silver costume looked genuinely cool). She was actually much more attractive the few times she did wear a regular uniform, ironically.

  4. She was the best thing about a generally poor show. Glad to see she understood the milieu, even if no-one writing the shoe actually seemed to.

  5. I think Kate Mulgrew was definitely attractive and almost Kirk-like in her role (I appreciate her supposed "craziness" a lot more now...didn't Kirk make random decisions a lot?)

I also liked that she didn't try to hook up with Chakotay when she clearly could have. That showed a lot of restraint.

I agree about B'Elanna. She was the true sex symbol of the show, head ridges and all.

  6. Oh yeah, gotta love those ridges. She could "grate my coconuts" anytime...

  7. Voyager was one of two Trek shows I never really watched (the other being Enterprise). Something about it just didn't grab me. The most I know about it comes from all the TV Guide covers with Seven of Nine on them because she was the new "hot" thing.

My friends at GeeksOn did an amazing interview with Garret Wang that really emphasised how the High Ups really have no investment in Star Trek at all.

  9. Aside from ST: Voyager being a rehash of both "Lost in Space" and "Battlestar Galactica", it was enjoyable to watch.

I met Kate Mulgrew for a brief instant when she shopped at my bookstore, and as an actor, she's top notch. Her take on the character was spot on, especially given the back story that she had a spouse back in Federation space.

And now she's gonna be in Equus... man, what a fanfest that's gonna be. Does one wear a Harry Potter scarf with Spock ears?

  10. Even as a Trek fan I wasn't that into this show. I think I've watched maybe half an episode. Not a complete half of a single episode, but enough small bits of various episodes to equal roughly half of one.

But I did and still do like Janeway. She seemed more captain-esque to me than Picard. Not that I have anything against Picard.

Oh hell, no more pretending. I'm an unabashed Kirk polemicist. No, it doesn't mean I dislike Picard in any way. I think that kind of competition is useless... it's just that I dig on Kirk's coolness and proactive leadership style more and Janeway seemed to have a little of that.

In the approximately 22 minutes of footage I've seen her in.

  11. I don't think you can say whether or not you like a show if you haven't even seen a full episode of it. I love Janeway and think Kate failed - she was still sexy!
