Pop star Beyonce has met with DC Comics & Warner Bros to discuss playing Wonder Woman in the proposed movie, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"I want to do a superhero movie and what would be better than Wonder Woman? And it would be a very bold choice. A black Wonder Woman would be a powerful thing. It's time for that, right?"
I think Beyonce embodies all the qualities that would make a good film Wonder Woman: she's beautiful, strong, energetic, and likable. And has great hair for that tiara.

I have no problem with the idea of a black Wonder Woman.
ReplyDeleteJust not Beyonce...she's a terrible actress.
You know, that could be quite awesome! She's got the acting chops. I question her action abilities, but she can dance so we know she can move. A few months of good training and she'll be kicking ass in no time.
ReplyDeleteBesides Charisma Carpenter, I think I could support a Beyonce WW.
Two words:
ReplyDeleteCat.
Woman.
Yes, Wonder Woman should be exotic, preferably with an accent to signal her regal status. I would prefer a Bollywood actress, if only to help market the movie outside the USA.
ReplyDeleteHow well can Beyonce act? Would the origin be changed to reflect her ethnicity? And if this is a movie about a female comicbook character starring an african-american actress, how do you convince Warners that this won't be another Catwoman?
Sure... why not?
ReplyDeleteNope, sorry, she simply doesn't have the acting chops to be Wonder Woman. We've started casting our superhero movies well, let's not blow it now.
ReplyDeleteShe may be all those things, but she is decidedly NOT one thing that I would argue is even more important: An even halfway-decent actress.
ReplyDeleteMight piss off those of a Greek ancestry. Who might righteously demand "My Big Fat Superhero Movie."
ReplyDeleteBeyonce was the worst part of Dreamgirls, hands down. She has no leadership persona and looks like an amateur, because she is. Every once in a while you get a singer who thinks they can act that wants to play a superhero they have no business playing. She is just the latest.
ReplyDeleteI rather have Beyonce than Megan Fox.
ReplyDeleteIf we're going to step away from an actress who could pass for Greek for Wonder Woman, I'd take Gina Torres over Beyonce. My mental test is "would my suspension of disbelief break if I saw this woman throw a car at somebody onscreen."
ReplyDeleteDid you see the racially hostile comments on Newsarama? Makes me shake my head.
ReplyDeleteYes, her acting abilities are debatable, but that's not why they were against her over there.
"I rather have Beyonce than Megan Fox."
ReplyDeleteThis is true. I don't want her either.
My choices were either Mary Elizabeth Winstead (I even shot an email to Warners about it and she actually did go in for an audition) or the sister from Chuck.
Oh man, Gina Torres would be great as Wonder Woman!
ReplyDeleteI don't think Beyonce is a terrible actress. Not a great one, but she's ok.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, she is NOT the choice for Wonder Woman. And yes, it's because she's...umm... not white.
A black Kingpin you can get away with because outside the niche world of comics most people wouldn't know who the Kingpin is if you asked them.
On the other hand, with a 60 year history, a cult hit TV show, and numerous versions in animation, plus her status as one of DC's Trinity, there probably ain't two people worldwide who don't who that Wonder Woman isn't black.
Casting Beyonce in the role would be just as ridiculous as remaking Roots and casting Nicolas Cage as Kunta Kinte.
Neither Beyonce or Fox are right for the role. Beyonce just doesn't have the chops and Fox just looks entirely wrong. One should stick to basically playing herself and the other to transforming robots.
ReplyDeleteI would say this is a bad idea just because WW is based on a Greek/Mediterranean heritage. She shouldn't be blatantly "black" or "white," but have more of an olive complexion. About ten years ago, I'd have said Monica Bellucci would've been perfect.
ReplyDeleteI'll join those who can't stand Beyonce's acting, and add that I hate the inevitable "gimmick factor" that would attend the casting. WB needs to find an actress who will become Wonder Woman and not be "[insert name here] as Wonder Woman!"
ReplyDeleteMegan Fox? I've only seen her in Transformers and that's not the place to judge acting, but she doesn't do it for me when I picture her in the outfit.
I'll second Karmakaze's vote for Gina Torres if they decide to "break down barriers" in the casting. She's tall, beautiful and plays very strong very well.
Holy crap - Gina Torres!! Yes.
ReplyDeleteThis won't happen. Warner Bros. isn't that stupid. I think it's just a way of promoting the movie. They'll most likely go for a lesser known actress, if not a no-name. Beyonce really can't act. I hated her as the Austin Powers' girl.
ReplyDeleteThis always seems taboo, but I don't think so. I believe a character comes off better with someone who looks like that character. I agree that there are some exceptions: Nick Fury (Because of Ultimates), Catwoman (Most would disagree, but I took it as a nod to Bat-Mania, which was adopted in comics. Still terrible though.), Kingpin (Duncan proved he could do the character somewhat. To me...he was the only decent thing about Daredevil. Everyone wants to play the blame game on Affleck, but it was the director. No surprise Mark Steven Johnson made one of my all-time favorites...Ghost Rider. God, I'm...I wish that he'd "go away"! Cough.)
Anyways...it does depend on audiences knowledge of the character too. But ya, I didn't get P.O'ed in X3 when Spike wasn't black or that Phat wasn't a white-guy pretending to be black. Yes, I know those characters. X-Force/X-Statix rocked! Go Milligan! Callisto from X3 was Dominican and Rogue just wasn't southern enough. Heh. But, look what happened to X3. Not awful, but not great. It was really short...and everyone dies. Which is alotta comic movies. But, very forgetful film.
All I'm saying...If you are iconic, the actor should always honor that with likeness. I mean, she's GREEK MYTHOLOGY BASED. What if Black Panther turned out to be chinese? And, there reasoning would be, "Well, we really needed an actor who can do all the martial arts, and certain stunts, so...". Everyone'd be like, "Uhhh, no.".
OH! And, before I forget, a "no" from me to Megan Fox too. As far as I can tell she can't act. Lotta that going around with pretty girls. Scarlet Johannson (spelling?)is very attractive, but I can only think of one movie she was good in: Ghost World. And, then she never changed her "character". As for Megan Fox, haven't seen her in anything other than Transformers, which I really didn't like. She just seemed like a pretty face to latch onto Leboufs character. I mean, girls have nostalgia for it, but it was more geared towards boy and guys with nostalgia. So it was like a big commercial like the original run of the show. It's like, "Look kids! Our "hero" gets a sweet car (Yay!), a pretty girlfriend who doesn't talk much (Yay!), and a sweet robot (ALRIGHT!)!!! And, I'm like..."Pathetic attempt at stereotypical guy-likes? I think so."
ReplyDeleteHas anyone consolidated the various WW casting rumors?
ReplyDeleteMy choice: Jennifer Connelly. 5'7", 38. If she's not available, find a talented actress from Bollywood with a British accent.
(And regarding all the to-do over ethnicity, Lynda Carter is Mexican-Irish.)
When I first heard this, I was surprised to find myself thinking, "That's not a bad idea." I don't think having Beyonce would be bad, but I don't think she solves all of the other problems that a Wonder Woman film has to face. In my opinion, there are quite a few ladies out there who could play the part just fine... if they're given a decent script. I just don't see how anyone can translate Wonder Woman to film and make it work, though. Hate to be a doubter, but there's my two cents. My worst fear is that we'll see Wonder Woman demoted to a lousy camp piece in the "glorious" tradition of "Charlie's Angels."
ReplyDeleteI think what perplexes me on this one is that I had an issue with the idea of Will Smith for Captain America. It makes me wonder if perhaps the idea of a black actor in the role of Cap doesn't bother me as much as just the idea of Will Smith in the part does. He just doesn't seem to have the right qualities to me and the idea of his lanky physique in the Cap outfit is just laughable.
Beyonce in a Wonder Woman outfit, though... Well, that's just... um, well... a great combination, shall we say.
I love Beyonce but my problem with this is it would become instant camp: "Beyonce IS Wonder Woman."
ReplyDeleteNow, if that's what they're going for then... er... okay. But they need to really think this casting over before they end up with a future "The Year's Worst Reviewed Movie" and Golden Raspberry award winner.
But if they cast Beyonce and made it, say, a musical?
Yeah, baby, yeah!
I like how that article completely dorked out and tap danced around the issue of Jeff Robinov being a dick, thus making Joss Whedon look like a bad writer.
ReplyDeleteDidn't see it was BBC. I was referring to Newsarama.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I like Megan Fox's body...of work...she doesn't have the right build for the role.
ReplyDeleteI take the same position on Beyonce/WW as Will Smith/Captain America. Color doesn't matter to me; just don't hire a turd of an actor.
Beyonce would be dire, also she would probably want to sing the theme song and most of the soundtrack.
ReplyDeleteGina Torres would be NIFTY! I do think that it should be a woman of olive or darker complexion. Not someone with a peaches and cream complexion. Megan Fox would also be dire. I hated her in Transformers!
It always drives me mad that the dorky guy (sorry Shia and those wore adore him) always gets the hot girl. They never have it the other way around, but I digress. Fox would be crap and Beyonce would become bigger than the movie with all of her tie ins. JayZ would do a rap, her mother would design the clothes, she'd get Solange to play Artemis or some other Amazon. Ah its giving me a headache just thinking about it!!
Visually I think Lauren Graham would portray an Awesome WW. Same deal as Monica Belluci, though, only about five years younger, and with Whedon on the helm.
ReplyDeleteABSOLUTELY a NO on Megan Fox.
She's black. Not going to work. Wonder Woman has been white in the comics for what... close to 70 years now and they want to change it? This reminds me of the rumors when Tom Burton was thinking of having a black Robin in a Batman movie. What the hell are they thinking?? It is what it is... make it look like the comic, don't fuck with the source material! This is why I'm scared for this new Sherlock Holmes movie!
ReplyDeleteBeyonce FTL. If you're going to go with a person of color, aim higher.
ReplyDeleteJust to clarify my earlier post, I'm not saying anything bad about Beyonce's acting ability. Because outside of maybe a few Pepsi commercials, I don't think I've actually seen her act.
