The Man In The Spider-Man Suit

If you want to read some fascinating stuff about being a "Spidey Mascot" in the 1980s, be sure to check out the "Heroes In My Closet" blog. Think of it as the memoirs of a "cosplay pioneer," who officially portrayed Spider-Man, Green Goblin, and other Marvel characters in North America and Europe for ten years.

I love these details:

"The Spider-Man suit was brilliantly crafted—comfortable, functional and visually stunning. It worked on anyone from 5'9" to 6'3". It’s ease of transport made it possible to fit in any over-the-shoulder bag as small as a Ziploc. I never had to waste time at the baggage carousel, or worry that the suit might get lost in transit."

"Despite all the great qualities of the Spidey suit—it’s nigh-perfect interpretation of the character; the ease of movement and relative comfort for the wearer; the vibrancy of its colors; the facility in its tranportation, cleaning and upkeep—it did present an odd downside: one-dimensionality, a tromp l’oeil effect that flattened the character, making him appear like a cardboard cutout, i.e. not real. From afar the affect is more pronounced. A child may not “see” me, even though directly looking at me, or sees Spider-Man, but thinks it is just a display."

"McFarlane’s popularity made my appearances more difficult. I was frequently asked, “Why are your eyes so little?” Some of the more confrontational fans challenged with “You’re not Spider-Man. Your eyes are too small.” I’d remain unperturbed and counter with “You must be referring to that McFarlane guy’s wild interpretation of me in the comics,” but the “eye” attacks only increased while my patience decreased."

The last quote comes from a fascinating post that describes how Marvel changed the standard "personal appearances" Spider-Man costume to fit the Todd McFarlane "look." I think a bunch of us remember the old Spidey costume from the TV show "The Electric Company" and other places: the one with the small eyes.

I never ran into Spidey at one of those events, but I did get Wolverine's autograph at Jim Hanley's many many many years ago. I remember analyzing his handwriting carefully: this was, after all, the hero who survived the Weapon X program and so many adventures. How did he dot his "i"?

Anyway, it's a fun blog – never crass or bitter about the subject matter – with a header and original illustrations drawn by the late great Rusty Haller, and is recommended.

Late 60s/Early 70s Amazing Spider-Man...

...catching up on some classic Spidey stories in Bring On The Bad Guys and Amazing Spider-Man Family #4.

Is there anything better than this?

All the Norman goes crazy/Harry is on drugs stuff...

I love how Stan Lee paces the writing so it's pretty much 1/2 Romance Comic and 1/2 Superhero Comic. I mean, did hardcore Spidey fans at the time realize they were reading essentially a romance comic with action in it? All the reaction shots -- angsty faces, tons of introspective dialogue:

"She gave it to me straight! I don't mean a thing to her. But, it was different--before Parker broke up with Gwen."

And the scenes where Norman goes crazy and Harry is tripping on the drugs -- that stuff must have blown people's minds back then. It's really raw stuff. It wasn't the JLA turning into trees. It was stuff that really happened...painful, uncomfortable stuff.

But best of all, Stan would work out these really awesome fight scenes...everything, both the fights and the angsty stuff, was done on this really open playing field...the art could breathe...not choking the art with word balloons.

Great comics, and a pleasure to read.

...

Poor Harry, he's such a creepy-looking guy. He's so messed up.

Occasional Links: The Alien Symbiote Plague Edition

http://www.marvel.com/universe3zx/images/thumb/d/d4/Venom_Spawn_(Donna)_Head.jpg/440px-Venom_Spawn_(Donna)_Head.jpg

I'm in bed today recovering from some sort of alien-virus spore that is living within my body. While Reed Richards tries to help me recover, I thought I'd take a moment to round up a bunch of links:

The Green Hornet movie has apparently been zapped. Aint It Cool News quotes HitFix as reporting that Sony has placed the film on "life-support." If you remember, Seth Rogen was to star in this adaptation.

Enjoying Project Superpowers? You might also like this radio show with one of the lead characters: The Green Lama.

Hulu is running the Spider-Man: The New Animated Series. It's a great way to get your NPH on!

Entertainment Weekly believes 2009 is a great year for "Werewolf Movies". I don't know if all that's true, but I do know it's a great year for Werewolf Webcomics!

Also, my BBC-loving, formerly Hull-living, fish-and-chips-eating, Magners-drinking BF is rather partial to this series.

Amazing Spider-Man Obama Update

Amazing Spider-Man #583 was sold out at NYC's Forbidden Planet comic book store between the hours of 9 and 10 o'clock this morning. New Yorkers braved the frigid weather to wait in line to buy the comic -- limit one per person.

I heard a report that Jim Hanley's, also in NYC, had a line outside the store waiting to purchase the comic as well.

I just wanted to follow the Spider-man story this week, but was unable to buy an issue.

If anybody knows what happened in that issue non-Obama-wise, email me. Especially if Parker starts dating that girl.

In other news, ComicMix reports that a number of comic book shops are donating the profits of Amazing Spider-Man #583 to charity.

Uncle Ben Parker Still Dead

Shocking Death Of Spider-Man Character!

I found this on CNN.com yesterday:

Uncle Ben Parker Still Dead

Uh, I don't know if you know this, but like Spider-Man's uncle died. Over forty years ago. It was like totally key to everything Spider-Man is about. You know Spider-Man, from those movies everybody goes to see? Yeah, him. There are comic book versions of that movie that you can buy. And in them, this character Uncle Ben dies. It was really shocking and stuff.

Gwen Stacy died too. She was also from the movies.

You can buy this headline as a t-shirt, by the way.

(Really didn't find this on CNN. But I might buy the headline "Puppy Gets Ear Stuck In Paper Shredder" on a t-shirt. You know, just to be irreverent.)

Peter Parker: Working At Comic Book Shop

Read "Amazing Spider-Man" #565 yesterday. Have kept up with the title on-and-off since the first couple of arcs of the weekly format, and I thought the current storyline -- featuring a new, female Kraven the Hunter and art by Phil Jimenez -- was a good place to jump back on board and stay on track.

I'll get more into the specifics of the issue another time, but I just wanted to point out that apparently Peter Parker is now working in a comic book shop.

I don't remember if by the end of the issue Parker managed to screw that up too, though the scene starts off with him getting dressed down by his boss.

Also, since the comic book store in question is very close to Union Square in NYC -- might I assume it is some sort of analog for Forbidden Planet, which is also in that area?

I find it a bit ironic that Parker would end up, after all his many exploits and adventures, sticking price labels on old back issues of "Alpha Flight." See, if he didn't make that dumb deal with Mephisto and lost MJ, none of this would have happened.

I want to read Parker's Facebook updates, dammit.

Mary Jane & Gwen Stacy Lookalike Contest

Newsarama reports that the Hero Initiative will be conducting a Mary Jane & Gwen Stacy lookalike contest at New York Comic Con.

"Ladies! People who aren’t Ladies! The comics social event of the season is now the fashion event of the season as well, with the first-ever GWEN AND MARY JANE LOOKALIKE CONTEST at the New York Comic Convention April 18-20! So dig out those go-go boots, and we'll all have to face it, Tiger—We're about to hit the jackpot!"

This got me thinking...

DC should do a Nightwing lookalike contest. That would be cool. Or it could simply be a Dick Grayson lookalike contest. Dick at different eras. With Jason Todd. Shaved legs optional.

Anyway, The Hero Initiative are good peoples, and it's a good cause.

Sunday Quickie Reviews

I clean off my reading table:

Maintenance #8: A fun outer-space romp in the mold of Star Wars via Futurama. This Oni title came recommended by a few people so I figured I'd give it a shot. A recap page of some sort would have been helpful; think I will wait for a trade paperback on this one so I can catch up.
Rating: B+

Ultimate Spider-Man #118: I bought this for the "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends" on the cover, but I could not be more disappointed. The majority of this issue features a bunch of teens, some of which have superpowers, doing an emo "OC" type jibber-jabber. What the hell? Where's Angelica Jones? Not a good jumping-on issue for new readers.
Rating: C
Buffy The Vampire Slayer #11: I haven't read an issue of this since #2, so I'm a bit rusty continuity-wise; but Whedon is fairly adept at catching up readers. Dawn is still big, one of the chosen has a crush on Buffy, and the latest Big Bad Twilight almost reveals himself in a cute, patented moment of Whedonesque levity.
Rating: B+

Spider-Man: With Great Power #1: Yes, we've read Spidey's origin story like a billion times, but have you done it with such exquisite Tony Harris art? Writer David Lapham gets into the psyche of pre-hero Spider-Man, and, well...Peter is a bit of a dick. Almost hate to continue buying the floppies on this one, as I'd like to get a hardcover.
Rating: A
Birds of Prey #113-114: These were good issues, dammit!
Rating: A

Teen Boat #7: Remember the cartoon "Turbo Teen," where he'd get upset and his arms would turn into wheels and you would totally get freaked out? This is better. Read more of the free web comics here.
Rating: A
The New Avengers Annual #2: Not a bad issue, though way too many guns for a book called "The Avengers" and the opening sequence with Tigra almost made me stop reading.
Rating: B

Amazing Spider-Man Swing Shift Director's Cut: I didn't catch this the first time when it was a free comic. Go figure. Gives me a better perspective on the Brand New Day thing and Phil Jimenez' art is truly gorgeous. Worth it just to read Tom Breevort's 5-page "Spider-Man Manifesto."
Rating: A

Well, let the new pile commence!

Hey, He's F**king Batman!

Kevin Smith agrees with the idea of casting relative unknowns in the new JLA movie:

"It’s not like you can put Brad Pitt in it and he’s gonna be more important than f**king Batman. Or Superman. Like the characters themselves are the f**king stars of that movie."

His pick for the casting of Batman?

Michael Keaton. Because he's F**king Batman.

Is This The End For Peter & MJ?????

The cover of "Amazing Spider-Man" #545, from Newsarama.

The accompanying promo text, "The End of An Era"

What's going to happen?

Is this the end of comics' most beloved couple?

What did Kirsten Dunst have to do with it?

And whose hand is in that red glove?

I know!

"Jean Loring did it."

Whenever you don't know the answer, the best response is,

"Jean Loring did it."

Spiderman: "One More Day" Alternate Covers

I usually hate the whole "alternate cover thing," but these by Marko Djurdevic are classy.
