Remember those old "Marvel Swimsuit Issues" from the 1990s?
Who doesn't miss Cable in a thong with the X symbol on it?
I can't remember if this illustration is meant to be ironic
or were they actually serious back then...

Ah, the overkill before the big comic convention...should I or should I not buy comic books this week, when I have this big honking comic thing to do Friday through Sunday?
Maybe.
Well, what's on everybody's pull lists today?
You can follow along with this handy-dandy shipping list that can be found on...the Friends of Lulu blog! (ladies, did I ever tell you what a genius idea this was?)
Doing a quick scan, here are a few titles I will probably pick up...
Flash #239
Avengers Initiative #11
Captain America #37
Incredible Herc #116
Caption Action #0 (Paul Gulacy cover, if available)
Any others to recommend?
Well... If I were in Tokyo this week instead of next month, I'd hit Blister in Shibuya and pick up DMZ #30. I'm tempted by that Drifting Classroom series but I'm afraid I might find that physically repulsive and somewhat disturbing.
ReplyDeleteNot that these are necessarily bad things. I enjoy Ito Junji's comics for just those reactions but since I actually teach a lot of children about the same age as the kids in Drifting Classroom, I just don't think I could take it. Too personal.
I'm also tempted by Batman and the Outiders #6 because of my Batgirl addiction but since the upcoming miniseries is written by someone whose writing doesn't interest me in the least, I'm trying to quit her cold turkey!
Re swimsuits, they were *all* serious back then, whether they knew it or not. You can't pile muscle on top of muscle on top of semi-naked flesh and not mean it.
ReplyDeleteThe Image style was pornography.
Check out my story in AVENGERS CLASSIC #11! Art by Kano!!
ReplyDeleteLooks like this will be my pull:
ReplyDeleteCap #37
Herc #116
Initiative #11
X-Factor #30
That might be it. I'm sure I'll get the second LOSH showcase and the Iron Man Omnibus later, but not today. Interested in '76' from Image, but I want the TPB rather than the singles.
I totally forgot about those swimsuit spreads. Bananas.
ReplyDeleteYeah some of those swimsuit shots were craptacular, some verging on porno (Image and Wildstorm I'm looking in your direction) and some really nicely and tastefully done...
ReplyDeleteman, even when i was a kid those were BAFFLING to me when i thumbed through the posters. of course, i'd then buy the stoner-art j.r.r. tolkien poster but lets keep moving, shall we?
ReplyDeleteFor me, looks like it's:
ReplyDeleteGrendel Behold The Devil #6
Brave And The Bold #12
Countdown To Final Crisis #2
Captain America #37
The DC books are both inertia purchases for me. Yeah, I'm part of the problem. :-)
I'd recommend Grendel probably only if you're a longtime fan and aren't already getting it. Consistent tone and voice in Matt Wagner's treatment of his best-known character.
I think those swimsuit issues were meant to be serious. I mean, it WAS the 90s... Sad to say, I had 3 of them myself...but they were all given to me because I liked comics, I didn't actually BUY them. Also, as an aside, most of those swimsuit shots were featured in a chase set as part of the Women of Marvel card series.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, my pull list:
99 #7
ANNIHILATION CONQUEST #6
ARMY OF DARKNESS #8
AVENGERS CLASSIC #11
AVENGERS INITIATIVE #11
BATMAN CAND THE OUTSIDERS #6
BRAVE AND THE BOLD #12
CAPTAIN AMERICA #37
CAPTAIN MARVEL #5
CATWOMAN #78
COUNTDOWN #2
DARKNESS #3
DC WILDSTORM DREAMWAR #1
DMZ #30
GHOST RIDER #22
GOTHAM UNDERGROUND #7
INCREDIBLE HERCULES #116
IRON MAN #28
IRON MAN LEGACY OF DOOM #1
MARVEL ADVENTURES AVENGERS #23
RED SONJA #32
SALVATION RUN #6
TANGENT SUPERMANS REIGN #2
WAR IS HELL #2
WOLVERINE ORIGINS #24
WORLD WAR HULK AFTERSMASH WARBOUND #5
X-FACTOR #30
X-MEN DIVIDED WE STAND #1
But it seems as though the 99 didn't come out this week, so I replaced it with an Archie Digest.
ummm so far,
ReplyDeleteCable #1
Dresden Files #1
Doctor Who #3
X-Factor #30
have to go back and look without my 2 year old pulling me in the other direction...
Drifting Classroom shows up, eats all comics that came out today, points out that it ate all of them in 1974 as well, and goes home. All Star Drifting and Classroom The Boy Wonder.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I bought this week was the Green Arrow Year One hardcover. (I waited for the collection.) And I think it was a very well-paced, well-drawn adventure. (Not sure how it played in the individual issues.)
ReplyDeleteI've always had a soft spot for Ollie (and archer heroes in general, particularly the green-clad ones), but this was better written than some Green Arrow comics.
Allen
Tucker Stone has made me laugh. I wish I could share that Drifting Classroom comment with someone but no one I know has any idea any of this stuff exists.
ReplyDeleteI picked up:
ReplyDeleteFlash
Superman
Brave & Bold
Infinite Horizon
Captain America
Suicide Squad
Legion in the 31st Century
Bat Lash
