New Poll: Will The Cast Of The New "Teen Titans East" Special Die a Quick And Horrible Death?

Reading this interview with Judd Winick on Newsarama about "Teen Titans East," I can only assume the worst will happen to this erstwhile new-but-sort-of-crappy team. I think the tip-off would be the inclusion of "Hair-On-His-Chest-Lad." Having Power Boy on your team is sort of like painting a big target on your clubhouse.

The sorts of dudes and dudettes in "Teen Titans East" are the ones that would have died first in the original "Crisis." If "Slobbo" from "Young Justice" was still around, he'd be on Teen Titans East. If "Team Titans" were still around, they'd be on Teen Titans East. Slapstick from "Avengers The Initiative" laughs at "Teen Titans East." Flat Man from "The Great Lakes Initiative" spits flat spit at "Teen Titans East."

That said, I have much respect for Cyborg, and suspect it was simply part of his contract with DC that he got shanghaied into "Teen Titans East." Since Judd Winick has stated his plans for bringing back the "Wolfman/Perez" era Titans, I think he's safe.

What do think?

  1. i am pretty sure they will not all die, but the possibility of them being whisked to some other universe does seem high.

how else will they be able to get donna troy on the team.

i also did not read that interview, as while i occasionally enjoy a winick comic, i detest his 'cleverness' that he feels he must showcase with the world at all times.

reading an interview with him is sort of like playing a game of kickball with ball filled with crap where when you kick it, all the crap explodes up all over you and you suffocate under it.

pedro and me was a great book though, as it seemed a love letter to a friend and not one to himself.

  2. Winick's going to get George Perez to draw it and then hand the writing assignment over to Marv Wolfman? That's very generous of him!

At least one of the members of DC's tiny-but-overexposed writing pool accepts his shortcomings and knows enough to get someone else to write a book if he wants it to succeed.

  3. My prediction? Arrows in the neck for all of them.

(Cyborg will survive because he has a robot neck.)

  4. I think everyone except Cyborg and either Hawk OR Dove will die. I think we're going to start seeing a whole lot of plot points that echo back to the original or later Crises.

  5. There are many worlds. Many characters being introduced lately are from these worlds. The planets will once again have to be destroyed causing the death of many characters, probably including many if not all of these Titans.

  6. It will be a bloodbath. Most likely at least half the team will die on their first mission, prompting Cyborg to put together a team of more experienced players.

The fish dude is definitely a dead man swimming.

  7. All I gots to say is that me and Mister Baseball Bat have a standing appointment with anyone planning to kill off Hawk and Dove. I mean, it's not that I'm obsessed or anything...sure, I sort of like the characters, but Mister Baseball Bat, well...he's a real fan.

  8. ugh, what is this, the league of horrible costume designs?

  9. Remember: Power Boy is an Apokoliptian. And a stalker. And a one-note joke. Its like a whole new time started up just to tie into Death of the New Gods so that there's people around who will actually give a crap when he dies.

  13. While Winick is far from my favorite writer, I'll reserve my opinion until I read it.
That being said, something occured to me while reading the newest JSA. Much of what we're seeing, with the current characters in the DCU is somewhat analguous to Kingdom Come. The younger generation being steeped in casualties, the passing of the torch and the esteem placed on thr iconic DC characters is very reminiscent of the future KC depicted (albeit, KC had cooler characters.)What do you think?

    PS...Nobody misses Pantha. Seriously now.

  14. Hey! Saw the link to your blog on Tom Beland's blog, and checked it out. Immediately fell in love with it.
Gonna link you on mine, that alright?

  15. You know what I think the best thing about superhero movies have been? In a lot of cases (most notably, X-Men and The Matrix) smart costume designers have come up with a much more sensible approach to superhero costumery. I really like the movie versions of costumes. I like them much, much betters.

THESE ARE THE WORST COSTUMES I HAVE SEEN IN A LONG LONG TIME. Especially the guy and girl in the middle and the non-atlantean dude in the foreground. That guy looks like an 80s-costume throwback. The other two just suck.

These are the worst things I've seen since Black Canary's unforgiveable wedding dress.

And these costumes make me wish for the characters' deaths.

  16. Actually, Cyborg is the villain. He's sick of all the lame superheroes infesting the DC universe, so he's going to keep banding them all together, killing them in spectacular fashion and then blaming it on... I don't know... let's say Trigon.

  17. I have a longstanding sentimental attachment with the Wolfman/Perez original seven all the way back to when I bought DC Comics Presents #26 with the New Teen Titans Preview.

After a strong early 80s, the team and the book was never the same after Perez move on and Wolfman alone picked up the slack for a little while but he stayed on or was allowed to stay on (benign neglect by DC editorial?) for many, many years too long.

Since the Wolfman solo years until Graduation Day and Geoff Johns’ era where the Young Justice generation assumed the mantle, the Titans in all their incarnations have been neither fish nor fowl as far as DC was concerned.

(Example: Since the original CRISIS, the Titans have played no significant part in ANY major DC “event”---save for Infinite Crisis where past Titans were dusted off only for the express purpose of being killed).

Thing is I would LOVE to see the original W/P Seven back together again and I support and/or agree with many of the concepts that Judd Winick talks about in his interview.

But quite frankly, based on his record of performance Judd is writing checks that his “talent” (or lack there of) simply can’t cash.

Besides, I’m less than eager for Judd to get yet another shot at f**king up Nightwing like he did during his run on Outsiders. And don’t even get me started on “Cheesecake” Churchill.

I’ll go along with the theory that except for Cyborg, the rest of the characters pictured are little more than cannon fodder.

However, I’ll recommend the same thing that I did when the Titans East Special was first announced—Just Ignore it. Don’t buy it! .

If sales of the one-shot special tanks, it may, just may prompt DC Editorial to rethink the wisdom of a follow up ongoing monthly with this creative team.

A long shot I grant you but DC DID just do an 11th hour writer replacement on the new Batman and Outsiders re-launch so it’s not impossible.

    Cheers,
    FanBoyWonder

  18. Seems fairly clear that Trigon will return and kill off at least a few of the Loser Titan Brigade (probably Lagoon Boy and that dude with the V motif), followed by the W/P team reuniting to try and stop him.

Exactly like they did at the start of the W/P run. Hooray for originality!

  19. I think its safe to say that Hawk and Dove are safe (or Dove, anyway) but things don't look good for Lagoon Boy and Son of Vulcan - - did anyone read that mini?

Not to sure who the generic blonde is, maybe Magenta? She's probably a target - at least for Power Boy's poorly developed social skills (read: tendency to stalk and try to rape pretty blonde superheroes).

    So yeah, dead men walking.

  20. I read that mini! :) I really liked it - and I like the VULCAN character. I'm split on this TTEast thing since I like that Vulcan's getting more exposure, but not for much longer from the looks of this.

PS- the "Son of Vulcan" mini was actually written very well (I like Scott Beatty), but the art by Keron Grant/Danimation was difficult to read at times. Too bad there won't be a trade - it could use a re-color at the least.

  21. WTF does DC keep spoiling every plot twist or big pay-off before the set-up even begins??? Why not sell this book now and wait until the old Titans line-up is solicited before talking about them? Who is going to read this book knowing its ultimate pay-off is going to be another book?

Other than that, I've given up caring what Winick has to say about anything. He's the hack's hack. He's always going to be the guy called in to write some utility story to kill someone off. Plus, he's a Hell of a jerk in person.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Personally, I hope the entire special is devoted to some sort of upstart villain sneaking up on Power Boy and beating him to death while he's invisible and somebody else videotapes it. That's all I ask.

I think there is a conscious decision at DC Editorial - or at least certain writers (I'm looking at YOU Geoff Johns) - who have this jones for Kingdom Come, and for a while some were speculating that it would cease to be an Elseworlds tale and become the bona fide "set in stone future" of the DCU.

However, with the multiverse back and Earth-KC being one of them, that seems unlikely, but I suppose it's still possible.

  26. Does anyone remember Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers Of Victory #0 where the cowboy Vigilante put together a team of heroes who were slaughtered by the major bad ass villain of the series and from the ashes of the first team arose a new team to conquer the horrible, earth destroying evil?

    Or is it just me?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Will: Yup. Because Winick hasn't met a rehashed plot point he didn't want to steal.

And I'm betting the reason that DC are telling you "Buy this book 'cos everyone's gonna die and it'll lead into a new series!" is because no-one will buy it otherwise.

Question: I'm not a Titans buff... but is there an iteration of Teen Titans East that didn't end badly?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Technically, no, but that's only because we've only had one team call itself Titans East - the villain team Deathstroke put together. Otherwise the alternative team has been Titans WEST. And even then, those teams drifted apart, not slaughtered for the sake of a some body count (with the exception of Golden Eagle during the Titans Hunt, but the team didn't exist at that point).

I don't know - I know Winick can write an interesting comic; I've seen it before, it's just sometimes he really just gets too carried away.

I'm remaining cautiously optimistic that the only one to bite the bullet is Power Hole, and even then it won't be because of Trigon or whoever comes back, but rather the guy killing New Gods will suddenly show up while he's running away and snag his heart.

  29. Given that that cover is the first time I've seen the new Hawk and Dove since Day of Veng. I'd be pretty ticked if they were killed in this comic. I dug those characters in just 3 issues that I saw them in.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'd be ticked to lose Cyborg, Hawk, Dove, Vulcan and Lagoon Boy...at minimum.

Besides, in case # 4, he's got one of those DCU-specific cities that I'd like to see explored further somewhere down the line: Charlton Point, Connecticut.

Yes, I'm a crypto-geography fan. But then, with my work history, I would be. :-)
