OS reader Dan Radice from The Grandly Spectacular And Fantastically Phenomenal Fad Diet Experiment blog imagines what the Youngblood "Obama Gun Cover" variant cover I posted a couple of days ago might look like with the legs finished:
As you can see, Chapel would need to be over 8 feet tall, and our President would have to stand on a box.
Who could benefit from the Liefeld style of creative cropping:
Wait-- like, I just assumed that Mister Skullface was 12 feet tall; then again, it didn't occur to me that Obama would need to be on a box. It DID occur to me that their feet were suspiciously absent...
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's a perspective thing since the image is 2D? Maybe Obama is standing 40 feet in front of Chapel?
ReplyDelete"Recently she posted a cover for the comic book Youngblood, as drawn by highly dynamic, but anatomically-challenged artist, Rob Liefeld."
ReplyDeleteheh... wonder which part of him is "anatomically challenged"... but it probably doesn't matter, since he's "highly dynamic".
Pretty smart of the Cruises there. They know their perspective shots -- have the taller one stand in front of the shorter one. Have her at an angle. Have her lean a little into the shorter one. Do all that, and the height difference won't be so great.
ReplyDeleteThat's my wedding photographer taught me, because my wife is a foot shorter than I am. We used some of those tricks that day.
Torsten: Yes, "anatomically-challenged," as in his understanding of human anatomy is less-than stellar. He may also have micropenis, as the sly implication goes.
ReplyDeleteAnd, personally, I don't care for his art, he gets work because he is dynamic. I showed that to a non-comics-reading friend who said, "Wow, that looks cool."
So, there's some sort of messed-up appeal to his artwork. I guess. *shrug*
It's a black dude in a suit! Must be Obama!
ReplyDeleteI'll grant Mr. Liefeld the anatomy conceit. Why is the President holding a gun like he's teamed up with an amoral assassin?
ReplyDeleteOh right; because this is the muppet who gave us Ass-Kicking Christ.
Alot of people critisize leifields art, about not being realistic enough, and saying stuff like he knows nothing about anatomy and so on.But I always took it that comic art isa not meant to ber 100% realistic so it never bothered me.And i just take this as a case of exaggeration to make the character look more heroic.Although a buff armoured Obama would've been pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteAlot of people keep critisizing this guy saying he doesn't know his anotomy he can't draw realistic people, but thing is, who ever said that comic art has to be 100% realistic. This is a case aof exagerating a characters features to make him more heroic looking.Although a buff arored Obama would be cool too.
ReplyDeleteLiefeld sucks, always has, always will. The only thing worse than his drawing is his writing.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, I was waiting for you to comment on Hayter's plea. I was genuinely shocked and a little impressed by that closer. People like Hayter are the reason everyone has to take sensitivity training nowadays. People do not consider the impact of their words on their audience.
That argument would be valid except for one thing: in order to draw stylized art, you need to have the basic concepts of anatomy down. Kirby did. So do many artists whose styles are wildly exaggerated and odd. You can't use the "realism" excuse. You need the basics in anything. Writing, music, drawing, painting, whatever.
ReplyDeleteBad art is bad art, realistic looking or not.
"Maybe Obama is standing 40 feet in front of Chapel?" That would make Chapel, um, cathedral sized. It makes the problem worse.
ReplyDeleteLiefeld is good at what he does, though I worry that he won't be able to adapt his style quickly to changing tastes. He's not suited to genres outside of hard charging two fisted action stories. Rambo or Punisher yes, Godfather or even The Matrix no.
Puppetboy, this drawing is 0% realistic and 100% shithouse.
ReplyDeletemaybe Obama is standing in front of a poster of chapel and people that say comic art is not supposed to be realistic have never seen the artwork of those old newspaper strips look up secret agent Corrigan or Rip Kirby, LIEFELD is self taught i think
ReplyDeleteIf Liefeld is self-taught, it brings to mind that old legal cliche about the person representing himself who has a fool for a client. Does that work for teachers as well?
ReplyDeleteLiefeld's easy to mock. I prefer the bigger targets myself. But why is everyone calling the guy in civilian clothes "Obama?" I thought it was supposed to be Jaleel White.
"Alot of people keep critisizing this guy saying he doesn't know his anotomy he can't draw realistic people, but thing is, who ever said that comic art has to be 100% realistic."
ReplyDeletePUPPETBOY, besides what everyone else has said..... knowing how to draw anatomy MEANS that you know how to draw realistic people.
