Obama "Gun" Youngblood Variant Cover

I was having lunch with the BF when he told me about this Youngblood variant cover depicting President Obama holding a gun. I actually choked on the nacho I was eating.

"A gun? Really? What type of gun?"
"A big gun."
"But I mean what, a rifle?"
"A Liefeld gun."

This isn't unprecedented. I mean, there was Reagan's Raiders:

But what do you think? Is this cover appropriate? Is this an image that you think Obama would personally approve of?

  1. I really don't think the image is either appropriate, in the spirit of Obama's presidency, or relative to actual sizes.

    I mean, come on. Obama's 6' 1 1/2" tall. That'd put Chapel at well over 8 1/2 feet tall...geez, Liefeld.

  2. That is so goofy. I don't think Obama will exactly be pleased about this image, although it's hard to take it seriously.

Personally, I will always remember the day I saw Obama holding a rolled-up-newspaper gun.

  3. Are you sure that's even a gun? It just looks like the world's bulkiest hand scanner.

I mean, yeah, it's Liefeld, so if it's not a sword or a bow, then it's a gun, but it's hard to get offended by a drawing of an armed Obama when the "rifle" looks like someone welded 4 old modems together.

  4. I dunno, is the white house being invaded by aliens?

I'm pretty damn liberal, but I still believe in one's right to defend one's own home. So I'd give it a pass if it's that kind of situation.

  5. I think he'd have to be told that's supposed to be him. other than the fact that it's a thin black guy, he looks nothing like Obama. Why did anyone ever think Liefeld was any good?

Also, yeah, that guy behind him seems to be at least 4' wide across the chest, and at least 8 feet tall.

  6. Fortunately, the guy in the picture doesn't really LOOK like Obama, so much as he bears the symbolic and stylistic hallmarks that we've associated with Obama (the hair, the shirt and tie). Leifeld just doesn't really have the chops to make any character he draws look like anything other than...well, every other Leifeld drawing. Take a look at that face and compare it to any picture of Obama...FAIL.

  7. Dude, Obama & Mister Skullface are going to play HELLA Lazertag.

  8. Um... isn't Chapel the mass murderer who originally assassinated Spawn, and at one point ascended to the role of some sort of Demon Lord in Hell after blowing his own face off with a Liefeld gun? And wasn't it Liefeld who allowed Alan Moore to turn Sentinel into a murderer, as well?

Does Rob listen to too much Rush Limbaugh, or does he hate black heroes, or what?

  9. Are you sure that it's a gun? It kind of looks like it could be a vacuum cleaner. :)

I don't think Obama would approve of his missing left hand, or the size discrepancy, nor Chapel's HIV-fueled assassination techniques.

OR the starburst underarm shirt creases, or Chapel's excessive use of pouches, or the crooked clip coming out of Chapel's gun...

Oh who am I kidding. How could he NOT approve?! This is classic Liefeld!!

    (I like the background details...)

  11. Irrelevant. Liefeld didn't even bother trying to draw President Obama. He drew Generic Black Guy in a Shirt and Tie with Giant Gun.

    UGH LIEFELD

It's like Liefeld purposely hates us all. Really.

  14. Context is E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G.

If he was pictured wearing desert fatigues, rescuing a batallion in Iraq; or wearing saggy-ass jeans, holding a "gat" sideways, Tarantino-style, I'd be first to cry "Fowl!". But he's holding a ray gun. It doesn't even look vaguely like a real gun - it's more a space-agey "blaster weapon". The only way it could be more innocuous would be if it was a light saber, or Harry Potter's wand.

The ultra-serious "dark" art aside, I think the effect the artist is aiming for is "comical"

  15. Do we know for sure that's supposed to be President Obama? It might be a story about Chapel's adventure with his son.

  16. That's not a gun. It's a sub-quantum economic stimulation device. I hope he shoots me with it.

  17. That is just lame. ASS. Yuck.

  18. Hey, don't forget "Cyber-Ike" from the American. Or RoboNixon from Futurama.

I think of Obama more as a Jacket-and-no-tie-twin-handguns-akimbo-John-Woo-style sort of guy. Imagine him sliding down a banister guns ablazing, shooting the recession in the face with red hot fury of the dual tools of federal funding and tax cuts of the stimulus package.

That wasn't meant to sound as dirty as it came out. Dammit.

  19. I don't think Obama would disapprove if it were drawn by anyone other than Liefeld.

Come on! Where is Obama's left hand?! Why is Chapel a giant?! Why does the ammo magazine connect to the trigger in Chapel's right hand/2 finger claw?!

So aweful, I am to this day still amazed this guy can get work drawing. It doesn't even look like Obama.

Geez....start a rumor the guy read a few Conan and Spider-Man comics at some point in the past, and it's suddenly open season on featuring the guy on every desperate creator's cover. Is it Obama's supposed geek cred, or is just the garden-variety foot-licking fawning we're seeing here?

  21. typical Liefeld art.

Doesn't even look like Obama either.

  22. that cover is awesome. I'm going to have to find a copy.

  23. I think it's a leaf blower. If it is the President, and it is a gun, then..
    1) where is his Secet Service detail?
    2) how difficult would it be to create some sort of Liefeld-missile that homes in on the light being emitted from the gun?
    3) since he's the President, shouldn't he deserve a bigger gun? Some body armor?
    4) not an Image fanboy, but wasn't Chapel a gov'mint employee?
    5) if Chapel is normal size, then how tall is Mr. Junior Executive?

Now, if you'll excuse me... Bluewater's Sarah Palin comic just came out. I hear rumors that she battles the Russian Roulette. (ooh... 30 Days of Night Cameo?)

  24. A heat packin Obama.now that rules.I don't think he'd be too upset by it's somewhat toung and cheek. As for critics of liefields art I don't think it was ever intended to be super realistic.
