Your Rob Liefeld Critique Of The Day

OS reader Dan Radice from The Grandly Spectacular And Fantastically Phenomenal Fad Diet Experiment blog imagines what the Youngblood "Obama Gun Cover" variant cover I posted a couple of days ago might look like with the legs finished:

As you can see, Chapel would need to be over 8 feet tall, and our President would have to stand on a box.

Who could benefit from the Liefeld style of creative cropping:

Obama "Gun" Youngblood Variant Cover

I was having lunch with the BF when he told me about this Youngblood variant cover depicting President Obama holding a gun. I actually choked on the nacho I was eating.

"A gun? Really? What type of gun?"
"A big gun."
"But I mean what, a rifle?"
"A Liefeld gun."

This isn't unprecedented. I mean, there was Reagan's Raiders:

But what do you think? Is this cover appropriate? Is this an image that you think Obama would personally approve of?

Admit It, You Thought Liefeld Was Cool Back In The Day

It's ok, we are all friends here. You saw the cover to X-Force #1 when you were a teenager and thought it was the coolest thing ever. You bought all the multiple covers -- and bought extra to take the trading cards out.

You tried to draw like Rob Liefeld. You did. You drew little prototype comic books starring superheroes with lots of lines on their face. It's quite alright.

Those impossibly-sized and -shaped guns Cable used to carry -- you thought that was the coolest thing ever. Ditto for Steven Seagal's ponytail. I know.

I was there. I know. And it's ok, really. We were oh so much more younger then.

That said, what do you think of this Rob Liefeld "Armageddon Now" book? Think about it: Christian "end times" prophecy plus impossibly big guns plus fully-painted Liefeld artwork.

So in this book the Russians are the enemy again, and they wish to destroy Israel in order to "leverage themselves in the Islamic world." Now, the Russians are actually worshiping some ancient godlike being, involved in some demonic cult. And it's all related to the Bible's Book of Revelations. With quotes.

The funny thing is -- there have been a lot of aborted or unsuccessful attempts to create a truly successful, crossover appeal Christian comic book, and having Liefeld spearhead "Armageddon Now" might actually do the trick.

Still can't draw feet, though.

Liefeld Vs. Moore: Death Match

"And if all his magic nonsense is real then why didn’t he go into the dream realm before he wrote Watchmen and see the future success he would achieve and decide to keep all the rights to himself?"

-- Rob Liefeld on Alan Moore

The comment thread that follows this Blog@Newsarama post is priceless.

I have to go wipe the tears from my eyes now.

Fangirl Fridays: The "Apocalypse Liefeld" Edition

Doing a book full of naked girls doesn’t interest me—never has,” he says. “But guys shooting heads off, putting knives through each other? I’m all for it.”

--Rob Liefeld, creator of the upcoming "Armageddon Now: World War 3," based on the book of Revelation and the prophecies of Ezekiel, "set in a sci-fi, testosterone-soaked, Halo-type setting."

WELCOME TO FANGIRL FRIDAYS!

Supergirl's Walk-On In Red Bikini Last Night On "Smallville"

Lana & Clark have a heartfelt conversation, then Lara inexplicably walks through the scene in a skimpy red bikini balancing a book on her head.

"Ya, ya, I'm exchange student."

No, it wasn't exploitative.

Clark: "Lana, my life has gotten a lot more...complicated now. I want to have sex with my hot cousin."

Lana: "It's not right, Clark. It's not right."

Clark: "Well, you slept with Lex, you got no right to talk."

When Bad DC Events Collide:

The "big reveal" of "Green Arrow/Black Canary #1:

"Get away from me, you damn dirty Amazons!"

But Cliff Chiang is pencilling, so I'm cutting slack.

1965: "You Can Show Midriff As Long As There Is No Belly-Button"

2007: "You Can Show Breasts As Long As There Are No Nipples"

And Chris Batista Is Pencilling "Robin!"

Ah, so when he said in San Diego "I have this big awesome project I can't talk about but it's awesome,"

THAT was what he meant.

The Butt-Cheek That Launched A Thousand Complaints:

The Cover To "X-Men #491" caused a stir recently because of Storm's submissive pose and exposed butt-cheek.

Was that butt-cheek functional? Or was it an exploitative butt-cheek?

Bellatrys could immediately find only one cover featuring such nonfunctional depiction of male buttitude:

let's take a closer look at this, shall we?

I had only $8.00 To Buy Comics At The Store, And I Spent It On "Booster Gold" & "Simon Dark"

Aaaaaand That's It For Fangirl Fridays, folks!

Liefeld Update:
Joe Casey New Writer On Youngblood

Joe Casey -- whose credits include "Adventures of Superman," "Wildcats," & "G.I. Joe: America's Elite" -- is going to be the co-writer on the "Youngblood" revamp.

Ethan Van Sciver is quoted as commenting on the Newsarama message board,

"This is the best news I've ever heard in my entire life."

Reactions on the board were split between "awesome" and "meh."

But as Erik Larsen commented,

"Obviously not every book is for every reader. There's no one title that is bought and enjoyed by every person that has posted in this thread much less to every reader who frequents a comic book store across this country.

That having been said--there are people that are clearly very enthusiastic about both Rob and Youngblood and I expect readers to absolutely go nuts for this new series, which really embraces the best of everything Youngblood."

My take? I have a certain nostalgia for the early Image books, so I am a little biased. I'm not jumping off the chandelier apeshit over the news, but I think it's interesting & Casey is a decent writer.
