There's No Crying In Comics

The sad thing is how many times I've heard a variation of this speech over the last few weeks.

  1. Which goes to show why speeches made by assholes shouldn't be listened to.

    Because they're assholes.

  2. Sad thing is, Jimmy learned a new how-to-deal-with-people behavior. I worry about the rest of the human race sometimes.

  5. IMO. This whole movie is really an under-appreciated Tom Hanks performance. Just good stuff.

  6. Yeah, great movie, but see, this is what comes of applying advice that's perfectly valid in one theater of life to others where it's not valid whatsoever.

I agree there's no crying in baseball. Not that Rogers Hornsby should've called Jimmy Dugan a talking pile of pigshit the day his parents drove all the way down from Michigan to see him play the game, but in baseball there is no crying.

However, in the rest of life that is not baseball, there frequently is crying. And when you have something to change, you should do what you can to change it. And if that involves making some noise, be it creating something revolutionary, protesting, merely complaining or even... yes, when things feel bad... crying...

Then by all means, do it.

And KLC had a point. All those people who point to this speech as advice miss the point that Jimmy Dugan learns other ways to make his points than screaming his head off and insulting people. And that's communication.

  7. Because that's only the best scene in the whole movie! I love it!
