AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #583
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #584
Amazing Spider-Man has become, for me, a habit. I don't always read them the week they come out, but instead hold on to them until I get a complete arc. Now, if this is the way I'm going about things, should I just wait until the trades come out? Well, you see, I'd feel guilty buying the trades because it would be an "expense." But there is more of an illusion of not spending a lot of money because it's spread out over the month.
DARK AVENGERS #1
This book really seems like Thunderbolts 2.0 (3.0?) to me.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #9
Abnett & Lanning are currently the best writers of sci-fi comic books, in my opinion.
MIGHTY AVENGERS #21
Looking forward to Dan Slott's turn on the series.
UNCANNY X-MEN ANNUAL #2
I am not a big fan of the "reformed" Emma Frost, as I never trusted her. Some women, in my opinion, are just irredeemably evil and "the love of a good man" isn't going to do some magic trick on their hearts. Will this "Dark Reign" storyline reveal her for the slag she is and finally get her away from Scott? Or am I being too optimistic? I always figured this Frost storyline would end with Jean Grey somehow coming back and leaving Frost just this diamondy smear on the pavement.
WAR MACHINE #2
Not decided if I'm going to continue to read this series, but giving it another issue.
What comics are you buying this week?
Regarding your comment about Emma Frost, I'm still laughing about Joss Whedon's line for Kitty, said to Frost: "Oh my God ... YOU teach ethics?"
ReplyDeleteI like a good redemption. Buffy did great ones - Angel, Spike, Anya... Marvel has Rogue, Sandman, Magneto, Juggernaut, Thunderbolts... makes for a more interesting mix, no?
ReplyDeleteThis week: Air, Birds Of Prey, Superman Beyond (see if it explains any of FC6), Astonishing X-Men, Dark Avengers, Mighty Avengers, Thunderbolts (10 copies), Doctor Who, Fallen Angel, Night Witches...
To be fair to Emma (and as someone who loved Scott and Jean and hates Morrison for what he did to them, that's difficult), her redemption actually began much earlier with the death of the Hellions back in the early 90's.
ReplyDeleteHer relationship with Cyclops does add a bit of an extra carrot to stay on the side of angels.
The ones I am looking most forward to -
ReplyDelete1) Hellblazer 251 - I haven't collected Hellblazer in about 10 years but Peter Milligan, one of my favorites, is taking over. I loved Milligan's Shade the Changing Man and The Human Target to name a few.
2) Supergirl 37 - Starting the 'Who is Superwoman' arc. Surprised you haven't commented on the Gates/Igle soft reboot of Kara on this blog.
3) Xfactor 39 - Madrox and Siryn's baby is born. Peter David's stuff is usually great.
Not sure about purchasing, but I will be dropping several subscriptions from my local comic shop:
ReplyDelete1.) Any last Final Crisis tie-ins. I'm officially done. The series sucked, I'm done.
2.) All of my DC Comics in general, except for JSA. Johns and Ross do a better job here than Morrison has done for DC over the past five years. He will be missed.
I will be picking up/downloading Dark Avengers, Mighty Avengers, and New Avengers just to try it. I love Slott, and Bendis is still okay to me, and the Iron Patriot intrigues the hell out of me.
Will probably drop Mighty Avengers. Nothing against Slott, but I'm looking to collect fewer titles and that Avengers line-up doesn't do anything for me. New Avengers and (maybe) Dark Avengers are more my taste.
ReplyDeleteI'm in the "only buy trades" boat, as I have too little room or patience to read incomplete stories, waiting a month between each part.
ReplyDeleteSO, I'll likely be buying the Immortal Iron Fist trade 3 and possibly Tales of the Sinestro Corps War, both of which contain mostly supplemental material, and will hopefully...obtain JSA trade 3 with "Kingdom Come" Supes. We'll see...trying to save money is problematic.
When Jean returns from the dead, I hope she'll have enough pride not to care who Scott is with. He's been Douche #1 long before Emma got into the picture.
ReplyDeleteI think I know what you mean about "expenses." It took me a while to convince myself that trades (when bought at a discount such as at instocktrades.com) can sometimes cost about 40-50% less than buying the singles--or "floppies" as you like to call them. (Problem is, I end up buying more trades.)
ReplyDeleteThis week I'm getting:
ReplyDeleteARMY OF DARKNESS #16
ASTONISHING X-MEN #28
BIRDS OF PREY #126
BLACK LIGHTNING YEAR ONE #2
BRAVE AND THE BOLD #21
DR DOOM MASTERS OF EVIL #1
FACES OF EVIL DEATHSTROKE #1
GREEN LANTERN #37
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #9
JLA #29
MARVEL ADVENTURES AVENGERS #32
MIGHTY AVENGERS #21
MOON KNIGHT #26
NEW EXILES #17
PUNISHER FRANK CASTLE #66
ROBIN #182
SPIRIT #25
SUPERGIRL #37
SUPERMAN BATMAN ANNUAL #3
TANGENT #11
TRINITY #34
UNCANNY X-MEN ANNUAL #2
VIGILANTE #2
WAR MACHINE #2
WEAPON X FIRST CLASS #3
X-FACTOR #39
X0MEN KINGBREAKER #2
X-MEN LEGACY #220
Also getting but putting in my bag as they don't fit in my budget:
CAPTAIN AMERICA THEATER OF WAR
DARK AVENGERS #1
DARKNESS #74
THUNDERBOLTS #128
WOLVERINE ORIGINS #32
X-MEN MANIFEST DESTINY #5
Mysterius The Unfathomable #1 - This looks like a quirky funny story with a nice edge to it.
ReplyDeleteStormwatch: PHD #18 - This series continues to be one of my favorite title every month. Edginton had done a good job putting this Stormwatch in the same vien of Ellis' Stormwatch.
Superman Beyond (which goes BEFORE FC6 in sequence, Rich, if not actual release).
ReplyDeleteAnd Supergirl, which is much improved.
That's it for me until a new revenue stream appears, so to speak.
"Will this "Dark Reign" storyline reveal her for the slag she is and finally get her away from Scott? Or am I being too optimistic?"
ReplyDeleteSeems like you're being pessimistic... hoping for the worst.
Not much looks interesting to me...
FANTASTIC FOUR VISIONARIES JOHN BYRNE TP VOL 00 is about it, but I'll judge it at the store. (Hoping Marvel will issue an omnibus edition, like they did with the Miller Daredevil.)
and gotta pick up last week's Wizard of Oz #2. And the Cougar issue of Spider-Man.
Final Crisis: Superman Beyond #2, because I'm apparently a masochist.
ReplyDeletePunisher MAX #66, cause I'm curious.
Hellblazer #251, for the same reason.
Rick, wait Fallen Angel is still being published? What's happening?
ReplyDeleteAvoid War Machine at all costs. Its only function is to be read as a parody of the "grim n' gritty" trend of days gone by. I think Greg Pak has been replaced by a Skrull.
ReplyDeleteI'm still on my Nana kick. I'm jonesing for #14!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, Val. Even the "reformed" Emma was a telepathic homewrecker!
ReplyDeleteLet's see...
ReplyDeleteAir, Captain America: Theater of War,...
Wait, seriously? Damn, I have a light week. Hooray for my wallet!
just an fyi, I have the flu today, and will be approving comments in batches (between sleeping)
ReplyDeletesee you tomorrow!
scottyquick:
ReplyDeletePeter David moved Fallen Angel from DC to IDW a few years back. A collection was recently published in a lavish, absolute-style HC format.
Thunderbolts 4.0, I think. Don't forget the "Fight Club" rendition.
ReplyDeleteAw, feel better, Val!
ReplyDeleteI heart Emma Frost-- moral ambiguity is the best. Anyhow, didn't the Devil kill Spider-Man? Something like that made everyone I know stop buying Spidey comics.
ReplyDeleteFables Volume 11 and Spider-Man, whichever one it was that Tom Beland's website said to get.
ReplyDeleteCan anyone tell me about Guardians? I'm not familiar.
ReplyDeleteI've been enjoying Supergirl since the first issue, and with the soft reboot it's even better.
ReplyDeleteAnd Superman/Supergirl:Maelstrom was fun too.
I'm still trying to figure out what happened to Bug in Guardians. I read the first issue in the store, and never bought the series when I didn't see him.
ReplyDeleteMark - Dayum! I better write down a note somewhere so I remember to buy that next time I go to Winnipeg.
ReplyDelete>> Can anyone tell me about Guardians? >>
ReplyDeleteIts D&D in Space!
And, I love it. A rag-tag group of outcasts joined together to cause trouble.
You've got your mage, your cleric, your paladin, your halfling, and your priestess. And, you've also got your Rocket Raccoon.
air #6, black lightning: year one #2, and spider-man noir #2.
ReplyDeletethat is if comic book beta on facebook is to be believed. they also have the astounding wolf-man under this week but image says next.
I picked up
ReplyDeleteSpider-Man Noir #2
Black Lightning #1
Dr. Doom and the Masters of Evil #1
Amazing Spider-Man #584
Dark Avengers #1
The 2 Spider-Man titles were my pulls, all the others were impulse buys.
I have always liked the Emma Frost Character. I really liked the Astonishing X-Men take on her, but have always liked her. I think Emma and Scott are a fun pairing. She makes him interesting. I am not reading any X-books except Noir at the moment, though.
Nothing!
ReplyDeleteIt's really liberating. :)
OK, I picked up Dark Avengers and I'm glad I did. Deodato's Ms Marvel alone was worth the cover price for me, but I thought it was strong first issue. This one's going on my buy list.
ReplyDeleteGuardians, I checked it out and maybe it's because I'm starting in the middle of an arc or something, but I have no idea what's going on.
I was on the fence, and then Dark Reign showed up.
ReplyDeleteMy first reaction was, "Wow, look at the horrible art"
Cue to a few weeks later when the Annual Uncanny X-Men comes out, and Emma Frost explains everything.
Then my reaction became, "So, Namor for example was drawn horribly and acted like a sleazy moron to fool everyone."
I think I'll stick to ASM and Deadpool, and X-Factor, the least global tie-ins, the better.
