  1. Regarding Infinity, Inc. #1, a couple things to keep in mind:

It's spinning out of 52 - from the looks of it, the team is made up of the remnants of Lex Luthor's custom-built team of heroes from the series.

52 also handled the "Why use the old name?" thing rather well. Luthor bought up the rights to the name when they lapsed, thinking the familiar group name would earn some points with the public he was trying to win over. There was a moment where the new kids meet the JSA and the Teen Titans, and neither are too happy at a bunch of rookies calling themselves Infinity, Inc. For whatever that's worth.

I'm not sure I'll be grabbing it either - 52 reminded me how much I like Steel when he's used properly, so the first issue might be worth a shot.

  2. Is 'Sword of the Atom' a collection of the Gail Simone Atom comic, or is it something totally different, and if so what?

  3. It's the mini-series from the uhm, early 80s? I remember buying it when it came out and enjoying it, but that might have just been the Gil Kane artwork.

  4. Yeah, Sword of the Atom is from 1983, with Jan Strnad (how do you pronounce that anyway?) and Gil Kane taking the blame for it. Okay, the art was pretty cool, because, what the hell, it's Gil Kane. And it has its amusement value for its portrayal of a very nearly bugfuck Jean Loring, just to show that Brad Meltzer wasn't writing her completely out of character.

  5. From what I know, Sword of the Atom's writer, Jan Strnad, used an approach almost similar to Alan Moore, including an interesting form of self-awareness (and I once found some page excerpts from the miniseries that showed how it was done). One of the reasons I'm going to be buying the trade paperback is in order to send a message to Dan DiDio and Brad Meltzer for contradicting it!

  6. Very pretty comics, even on the Pat Broderick special. So-so stories, with the exception of the Pat Broderick specials. That one was 3/4 suck, then does a 180 that flips the script in a stunning way (for the time, anyway.) Suddenly, a third genre sneaks in and rapes your sensibilities.

  7. Referencing "Sword of the Atom." Should have had that in the last post...
