What is it with today?! Ma Petrillo RIP

Seriously, this is just sad.
I used to watch the Golden Girls every Sunday. :-(

  1. I saw this too.

And a part of me just died a little...

    So long, Sofia.

  3. Whoa. That show really creeped me out.

I mean, Estelle Getty is a year YOUNGER than than Bea Arthur. (She was younger than Betty White too, but she wasn't playing her MOTHER.)

It's comparable to the creepiness of the Oedipal scenes in the Manchurian Candidate, knowing that Angela Lansbury is only 2 years older than her "son."

In a show about "old women," they couldn't even cast an old woman as the old woman? It's not even like a regular sit-com like Family Ties with Meredith Baxter Birney only 14 years old than Michael J. Fox because you want a young sexy "mom" character.

Would a real 85 year old not have the sex appeal of Estelle Getty?

  4. "I mean, Estelle Getty is a year YOUNGER than than Bea Arthur. "

I saw Bea Arthur at a function I was helping out at like 9 years ago, and at the time I thought she didn't look that well. I think she might have been sick, maybe cancer. But I also didn't realize how old she was. I heard that thing about her being older than Estelle, but I forgot it until now.

Does it ever freak you out that the middle-aged stars you watched when you were younger -- Leslie Nielsen, for instance -- are like really really old now?

What, he was in the movie Forbidden Planet in the 1950s?

Ah, here we go, Wikipedia: he is 82 years old.

    Charo, however, is only 57.

  5. Not so much, actually. Because of age compression in casting, I am always finding that the "grown ups" in the kids shows are younger than I thought they would be, while the "kids" are older. There just weren't too many "Golden Girls aged" characters I identified with in the early 1980s.

I mean, sorry to come back to Family Ties again, but I am much less surprised that Meredith Baxter is 61 (a little younger than my mom) than I am to find out that "Nick" is 50!

Marilu Henner (a grown up with kids on Taxi) is only 56. Sabrina Le Beauf (Sondra, the oljavascript:void(0)
Publish Your Commentdest kid from the Cosby Show) is 50.

  6. "to find out that "Nick" is 50!"

nooooooo!!!! Teh television lied to me!!!!

actually, Cameron from Ferris Bueller is 52, and he was in his 30s when he co-starred in the movie.

And Olivia Newton John in "Grease" wasn't even fooling me when I was four years old.

  7. Nick is 50?!! How old is Justine Bateman?

    Oh... 42. Well, that's cool.

  8. Have you seen 'Nevada Smith' with Steve McQueen? He was 35 at the time (and looked it, I'd say) but the character was supposed to be 16. I found it pretty distracting, especially since the characters kept referring to him as "kid."

  9. Ya know, this picture just made me realize that the little girl who plays Olive in "Little Miss Sunshine" is going to grow up to look exactly like Estelle Getty.

  10. I can't believe she's still alive. I also can't believe I used to watch that show. I mean, what the hell did a 10 year old in Kansas have in common with a bunch of old ladies in Florida? but I did watch it.

My freak out is the fact that I am now older than the big stars of music. This first occurred to me with Britney. I was like, "Holy crap, I'm older than Britney." Before then, music stars had always been young,
    but I was younger.
    This Too Will Pass

  11. BTW... my favorite Sofia line:
"Can I have a look at the Obituaries? I want to see if my Canasta game is still on."
