Occasional Links: The Capdickery Edition

Rags Morales: "I'm More Than Just Identity Crisis!"

New Nightwing artist Rags Morales laments to Newsarama about being pigeonholed as "that Identity Crisis guy":

"But I try to do better with every new project, so maybe you're seeing it like I feel everyone sees me -- as Identity Crisis. Please don't get me wrong, it's been a Godsend, and I loved what it's done for me. In some ways though, I feel like I may have failed the story a bit. That's something that kind of bug's me a little. I think most people don't think beyond that series when it comes to my work. I have a body of work, and there were some chances I took with Identity Crisis that I wouldn't want to do again, like the whole "casting" thing. From now on, I'm gonna think "character" instead of "who can play this character."

In Defense Of Tigra

Calvin Pitt writes:

"Bendis, please, stop writing about Tigra. I know Yu said she was gonna get a moment in the sun to make up for all the crap lately, but I have no faith in you to do right by the character. No faith whatsoever. If it was your pets, Luke Cage and Jessica Drew, then I might believe you were doing this with the purpose of showing what true heroes they are, and how they persevere. But since it's a character you've professed to hate, a character you have Edwin Jarvis, of all characters, calling an obscenity, I can't give you that benefit of the doubt (and we're gonna talk about that Jarvis thing tomorrow). Because you've given no indication you deserve it. The funny thing is, once upon a time (in Mexico) I wasn't prepared to buy that you did hate Tigra, thinking you just said that as a joke. I believe it now."

So what obscenity did Jarvis call Tigra, anyway? No cussing, please -- you can answer with the first letter and a dash and the word "word."

Tina Fey As "Tinkerbell"

From a Diesel Advertisement

She's a quirky, self-effacing fairy. Sexy because of her non-sexiness. Funny but like in this way that you don't really think she's funny, like you forgot she was funny.

Giving Tinabell a run for her money:

Meet "Duke" From "G.I. Joe"

Actor Channing Tatum has joined the 'G.I. Joe' team -- signing up to play Duke in the upcoming
movie.

In other news, here is my pick to play "Zarana" --

The Brevoort Blog @ Marvel.com...

...never fails to fascinate and amaze. A really interesting look at the making of past present Marvel books -- the good, the bad, and occasionally the ugly. Props to Marvel for being so candid.

Here is the column about the making of Civil War. The following quote regarding Speedball really caught my eye:

"Cripes this kid is your Sue Dibny except his insignificance in Marvel continuity and his connection to Tony is that tiny hole in the dike that starts the flood."

Yes, Speedball is to "Civil War" as "Sue Dibny" is to "Identity Crisis" (except Speedball doesn't get raped). He is also a victim but not a victim -- the cause of all the drama that is to follow and yet also a relative innocent (we will forget the whole "drug den" thing in "Alias") that is totally crushed by the horror he inadvertently unleashed (though, of course, according to the Deadpool/GLI special & Squirrel Girl it all really wasn't his fault anyway).

In a way, Speedball is more like Dibny AND Jean Loring. But the readers get a bit more satisfaction out of his storyline because A)He isn't dead and therefore able to deal with the ramifications & B) He is pretty kooky but not hopelessly evil & insane thus able to deal with the ramifications.

Anyway, the blog is fascinating, check it out.

PS: Just purchased a hardcover collection of "Identity Crisis" at a used book store. First thing me and my shopping companion did was turn to the masthead to see if my name was in it. Then I was thinking of doing a live-blogging thing maybe on Twitter to give commentary as I read it straight through. Started to read it, then headed straight into dinner with friends at an Afghan restaurant. Pepto-Bismol.

"Supergirls Gone Wild" --
Article in the July/August issue of "Mother Jones"

The headline?

"Female fans take revenge on the boys of DC Comics."

You should all check out this article in the entertainment section of "Mother Jones" magazine, on stands at the beginning of July and for which I was interviewed. It's written by Speakeasy.org's Charlie Anders, no stranger to the female comics blogging community.

It starts with Stephanie Brown, careens into "Women in Refrigerators," wades into the "Supergirl" mess, and ends with a hopeful note regarding Gail Simone and her tenure on "Wonder Woman." You've got "When Fangirls Attack," Spiderman's radioactive sperm, "porn face," Eddie Berganza's infamous "DC Nation" column, and even a quote from yours truly.

I think it is significant that such an article has shown up in a print format as opposed to the hundreds of online pieces on the same subject. I think this story has legs...if you would excuse the expression.

And for all my rants on why I feel that DC will never give Stephanie Brown her own trophy case -- they're really starting to look, in the media at any rate, like creeps for their stance. "Mother Jones" may be more on the liberal side of the pub spectrum, but you know this article is going to be bookmarked, quoted, and reproduced everywhere from message board forums to feminist term papers from now until doomsday.

My Blog Referenced On
Wikipedia's "Identity Crisis" Entry

Well, they spelled my name wrong, but still I thought it was kinda interesting.

I didn't go into Wikipedia and write this in or my own entry, by the way. But whoever wrote these things up I think did a pretty good job.
