  1. Aww, you worked with Karl Moline?? I met him a few years back. Really nice guy.

Congrats on your third Marvel piece in a row. :)

  2. Just a quick question.

Is this gonna be in line with the old Emma Frost solo series, or is this a completely new origin?

  3. To ask a relatively pointless fanboy question: Will this generally be in line with what we have previously seen about her past, or were you given free reign to create her bio?

  4. Well ain't you just tearing up the Marvel-verse. Awesome!

  5. I hate to say it, but the cover amuses me, not just in light of your views but because it reminds me of how Joss Whedon claims he picked Karl Moline for Fray because Moline was known for not drawing gigantic breasts on every female character. The big two response is of course to hire a cover artist who will make up for such an, ahem, deficiency. Well anyway, congrats!

I've been a big fan of his work on the Joss Whedon books, and I'm really jazzed about working with him on this! His art looks gorgeous on this book!

  9. Congrats, Val! You're plotting to take over Marvel, aren't you?

One question: are you dissapointed that the issue has such a cheesecake-y cover?

I read all the issues of the solo series, among other many other comics, before writing this. There are certain aspects of Emma's early life that were touched upon in the solo series that I definitely expanded on and explored in this book.

It's really a matter of working with the established origin and building off of that.

I'm bringing some new ideas & ways of looking at Emma to the table, while at the same time building off of what's been established.

I'm interested to see the reason(s) why she dresses the way she does.

    Congrats!

In regards to Emma's skimpy outfit, it at least originally was clearly meant to look like a dominatrix look.

It's pretty objectifying when you consider that she was created by males, but at the same time there are plenty of women who are into that sort of thing.

  20. Emma Frost? Next your going to go do a one shot of Witchblade or something. I always thought you disproved of stuff like this?

  21. I've always enjoyed your blog, & have always been fascinated by the way you've related the politics of gender to the super-hero genre. I'm really looking forward to seeing how you juggle what's been seen already in the Marvel Universe where Emma is concerned & your own ideas and beliefs about comics and gender and all that really interesting "stuff"!

And I know it'll be fun too .... Can't forget the fun!

and for the record: I'd love to write Witchblade at some point.

  24. She initially wore the dominatrix outfit because she was supposed to be a member of the Hellfire Club. The original (sans mutants of course) c lub existing back in the 18th century and I believe there may have been one in existence in the 70's and 80's. More of a Plato's Retreat type place.

I too am interested in knowing more about this. Actually, someone should do a book addressing super hero fashion and why there's so much exposed flesh when you know you're about to head into heavy combat. Been watching too much Project Runway lately.

  28. Congratulations! I will look forward to reading your take on the White Queen's origin. Currently I think there is only one (significant) WQ story written by a woman -- "Double Negative" from Classic X-Men #34 by Ann Nocenti -- so some more would certainly not be amiss.

If I may ask, how much creative freedom does Marvel grant on a project like this? I guess it will have to match the established facts about the character's past to some degree but is the recent characterization on Emma Frost also a factor? (It's understandable if you cannot or don't want to answer this of course, no problem)

The recent Cyclops Origin one-shot for example seemed to me more in line with his current position as leader of all mutantkind, choosing to walk a path between Xavier's and Magneto's rather than the original depiction as Xavier's obedient prize student. At least it included some hints for it, but if this was up to the writer or wishes/requirements from Marvel is of course up in the air.
