What I dig about her is that her persona is a total rejection of the Britneys of the music industry. Lady Gaga isn't beautiful in the way that music and Hollywood would have us believe beauty should be, and in fact, she goes out of her way to be un-glamorous. I love it. -r-
I am hearing this from a lot of people that I wouldn't expect to like her. I like her. I like a lot of her music, and I think she is fun and outrageous(her style) in an area that it is hard to be outrageous in anymore. Her music isn't outrageous, but it is catchy as heck. Her performance on SNL made me respect her ability.
Her songs are definitely catchy. I only know the 2 or 3 I have heard. Not so sure about the persona. The seams show in places. Madonna in the 80s had a more seamless facade.
I also would really like a new South Park album with a full version of the song by Cartman.
david,
Ladytron is known in the states and for all I know I may have heard one of their songs. Regardless, cool name from a song by Roxy Music from back when they weren't copmplete pussies.

I agree she doesn't have hollywood good looks, but she sure as hell uses sex to sell her music. When she came over to london recently we got to see her falling out of clubs in not much more than a thong and a broad smile almost every night - all calculated to keep her in the papers and keep people talking.
She's as much a 'product' as Britney ever was. I find the whole thing rather cynical.
I love how positive and inclusive she is in her interviews. She's anti-misogyny and anti-homophobia. I love her music, and the fact that she actually sings live. She knows how to wirte a good pop tune, and I giver her credit for looking back to greats like Judy Garland, David Bowie, and Grace Jones for her fashion and music inspirations.
I remember back in the good old days you had MY band's music on your myspace! (Y'know, those good ol' days when myspace was cool. And, umm.. used.)
ReplyDeleteif electro's you're bag, rather than ol' LaGa (who I'm not that hot on, I'll admit) try these:
LaRoux
(very catchy pop with a 'love it or hate it' voice)

Ladytron
(dark experimental pop)

AuRevoir Simone
(wistfull American electro ladies - David Lynch approved!)

Apologies if these bands are huge in the states - what would a brit like me know?
and no, none of them are actually my band ;)
I'm pretty sure she's Matthew Barney in drag (which is awesome).

You know what, so do I. Against my better judgement too.

I prefer Ladytron, but yeah...that Bad Romance song is kinda catchy.
ReplyDeleteAnd I hate myself for finding the video entertaining in a "oh man, I can't stop watching this weirdness" kinda way.
