Blake Lively As Carol Ferris In Green Lantern Movie

Blake Lively has been cast in the upcoming Green Lantern movie as Hal Jordan's love interest Carol Ferris.

I'll be honest, I saw more a brunette like Anne Hathaway, or perhaps even Jennifer Connelly playing the role. And yeah, I think age is a factor here as well as overall "look" – Lively being 22 and my conception of Ferris being somewhere in her late 20s/early 30s. Ryan Reynolds, who is playing Green Lantern, is 33. According to Hollywood, guys in their 3os & 40s are still vital and sexy, while there's a preference for their female counterparts to be in their 20s. I'm not complaining, I'm just saying that's the way it is – and this is why so many actresses, as they approach 30, drive themselves crazy and get plastic surgery and develop eating disorders, etc; it's a business decision.

And so maybe Blake Lively will really rock it in this movie and go on to meatier roles, or maybe she'll go the way of the woefully miscast and bland Kate Bosworth in Superman Returns.

What do you think of Blake Lively being cast as Carol Ferris?

  1. Hathaway would have been perfect! Connelly would have been a good choice if the role of Hal had gone to someone closer to her age. Come to think of it, if Bradley Cooper had ended up being cast as Hal he and Connelly could tried to make up for that awful "She's Just Not That Into You" movie where they played a married couple...

  2. I enjoy Lively, but I haven't seen her do kick-ass and confidant yet. Sort of how I always envisioned Carol Ferris.

And yeah, more in the older range. But I grew up reading Green Lantern mostly in the Kyle Rayner-era, and the previous generation in those Wally/Kyle/Connor books were always played as if they were in their late 30's. Do you think that's it?

  3. Blake Lively is a good enough actress and an attractive young woman.

However, she is a bad fit for Carol Ferris, who has more life experience than Hal Jordan. Casting a much younger actress kind of destroys the most interesting dynamic in the relationship.

  4. I could see her as Black Canary, but not so much Carol Ferris.

    Connelly, definitely.

  5. Reminds me of when Kate Bosworth was cast as Lois Lane in Superman Returns. In both of these cases I think the actresses are too young to play the characters.

  6. Never heard of her, looks like the usual cookie-cutter Hollywood blonde.

  7. Blake Lively is a terrible choice. I would have liked to see someone like Jenna Dewan who definitely has Carol's look and age. The one thing that always stood out about Carol was that she IS NOT blonde.

  8. I agree, Anne Hathaway would of been perfect.

  9. If she does her hair dark she might pass off in looks, but I dunno who she is so I can't comment on her talent.

  10. Don't discount the possibility of a dye job or a wig. Last time I checked, blond actress Kirsten Dunst wasn't a real redhead. And they got a real redhead to play a blond - Bryce Dallas Howard for Gwen Stacy.

  11. I believe she is way too young to be playing this role. The woman who plays Carol Ferris should not be under 25, absolutely. And GL and Ferris are close to the same age in the comics.

If they had hired a 25 year old male to play GL, this would not be so bad (although I would have thought of both as too young)

I actually think Connelly would have been a great, but she is probably a little old, especially for sequels.

  12. As I commented to some friends, I have to wonder if some producer asked for 'that girl from Gossip Girl' and the casting director just picked the wrong one. Because I could see Leighton Meester playing Carol Ferris; she'd still be painfully young, but she's a brunette and she could easily get the look down.

I'm not surprised that Hollywood is going for some Hot Young Thing here, of course. Disappointed as ever, but hopefully the movie can overcome all this typical LA crap. Not that I'm pinning too much hope on any DC movie more fantastic than Batman at this point...

  13. to be fair Ryan Reynolds still looks about 12...

But in principal I agree - She is NOT Carol. too young, too blonde.

  14. Gah, yes - Sorry for the double post, but the whole Kate Bosworth thing really burned me.

Lois had been a star reporter for HOW long before Superman disappeared for 5 years?

    Kate Bosworth was, what, 24?

    ARGH!!??

  15. To be fair, Ryan Reynolds IS 12.

  16. I don't know anything about Lively, so I can't say.

But then, sadder, I don't know anything about Carol Ferris, and I've got boxes of Green Lantern. Carol's got a fingerful of personality. All her character arcs have been about losing control of the company or the emotional yo-yo of the Zamarons' manipulation.

Hal doesn't have a ton of personality, but at least he alternates between cocky womanizer and staid gasbag depending on who's writing. Carol has had all the character development of a pizza box.

Kind of a raw deal for one of the more progressive Silver Age girlfriends.

  17. Didn't they turn Carol Ferris into a Lantern? One of the Sapphires?

I don't read GL that heavily, but that says to me right there "we have no idea what to do with this character".

If she IS currently a Sapphire, I have to rub my head in confusion. Is there a RULE somewhere that superheroes have to have a significant other? Am I just reiterating the Women In Fridge concept without knowing it?

  18. Yeah, this sucks, no offense to the actress. Hollywood is baloney. Jennifer Connelly in Ang Lee's Hulk was the best Lois Lane I've ever seen.

  19. I don't know Blake Lively at all, but I had always thought Carol a bit older. I'm not liking the direction this is movie is taking. I don't like Reynolds as Hal, maybe as Kyle, but not Hal.

  20. @Bryan

Carol Ferris has been a Sapphire off and on for decades.

  21. I always thought Robin Tunney would've made a better Lois. She's got similar bone structure to Margot Kidder, she's got the slightly scratchy, deeper voice...and she's a little weird, which fits. I mean, I can see her throwing herself off a building to prove Clark is Superman. Kate Bosworth's Lois had no sense of whimsy to her at all. She was just bland.

Hell, even Parker Posey would've been a better choice, even though she's a little too snarky.

  22. I think whether or not she's too young for the part depends on the film's conceptualizing of this character, which may be way different than the comic book's version. Whether that's for better or worse, I don't know. If the movie rocks, most people will come around to loving her in this part. If the movie stinks, this will be seen as one of its egregious errors.

  23. She's just a kid. To me, Carol is someone in her late 20s to early thirties at the bare minimum. Much like Superman Returns, this decision just doesn't fly with me.

    (Y'get it? Superman. . .fly. . . c'mon,that's witty)

  24. Oh God.

Carol Ferris was one of the first portrayals of a female in charge, and an entrepreneur, in comic book history. Possibly the first. While she inherited the business from her father, she DID run a large aviation company, and she did get the education to do so.

    Disconcerting.

  25. Lively as Cowgirl, that I can see. Maybe they're meshing the two characters.

  26. Well, it could've been worse.

It could have been Megan Fox.
